My Dilemma...Hang On Filter

ok, in another recent thread, i was mulling over moving my tank out a couple inches to be able to fit the filter and skimmer on the back. that idea is now nixed.
i have been looking at some options and i have a couple of questions.
1) what exactly does a canister filter do?
2) can the pentair inline system act as a sort of refugium that could go under my tank in the cabinet?
if someone could help me out with the dilemma of removing my hang on filter, i would appreciate it

Depending on your canopy, you could cut a hole in the side and put your skimmer there. I've seen it done like that a time or two. I personally had the same problem you did. My tank was too close to the wall... I mainly emptied it, moved it, and hung my skimmer on the back. If you decide to move it, get a friend to help, even mostly empty I had a HELL of a time moving my 29.

the more i think about it, the more i just want to get rid of my hang on filter and put something below (not a refugium or sump).
i would like someone to enlighten me on canister filters and inline filtration systems.

I hated the canister filter I had on my cichlid tanks a long time ago, maybe they are better now, I dunno. But one way or another you are going to want a skimmer, either HoB or in a sump.

Canister filters filter more effectively then hang on filters. I've heard very good things about the Fluval and Filstar canister filters.

I have a Magnum 350 canister filter on my 50g tank. It does a fantastic job filtering, and is not too noisy. How does it work? An intake tube filters directly from the tank/sump down a 3.5' hose to the canister. The canister has a variety of media (micron cartridge/media cartridge) that you can put into it, and also uses a filter sleeve. The water is pressurized in the canister, and is cleaned by the media. There is another hose coming from the canister to the display tank/sump, and this is the return flow. On the end of the hose is a U-tube/diffuser that lets you aim the return flow.
Ive never heard of the pentair inline system, but I looked it up and it looks like your typical canister filter.
My next project is a DIY sump, where I can hide all of my filtration, heating, protein skimmer instead of having it all in my tank......something for you to consider.
