My dog has lost his mind

It's 3:30 in the morning...Atticus woke me up at 2:30. I had my BiPap running. I thought maybe I was snoring in spite of the mask. I let both dogs out to releave themselves. I replaced the mask and lay back down....as soon as my head hit the pillow the dog gets me up standing over me on the bed...
So now I'm up and got on the computer....the dog cries and pokes my elbow with his nose and goes to stand by my mothers door. So knowing his history of knowing when we are not breathing well, I go into my mothers room to check on her. Now she is up too.
The dog is worried about something. I removed his parameter collar and Tams.....he has her all agitated now so she starts barking. I think maybe the thing is beeping or humming so I remove the batteries in both collars. Tammy starts barking because a removed collar means a trip to the garage because strangers are coming to visit or a car trip. Instead of the dog calming down he practically climbed on my lap.
My mother was on the computer and he nudged her elbow, so she came into my room...seems he want us together in the same room. He is trying to get into my lap as I type this. I gave him a pain med in case he isn't feeling well, but he seems fine.... just all scared and worried....maybe the pain med will knock his butt out
The sky is clear, the back door is wide open if he wants to go out and has tummy trouble...He is driving me crazy...LOL, I even checked my blood pressure just in case I'm sick and don't know it. He isn't acting like there is an intruder, he is acting afraid of something. Mother even gave him a hotdog in case he had a hungry growl and wants a snack.
So since I'm up...is there anyone else that is awake out there in cyber space?

He knows the aliens are coming
LOL...I finally gave him some medication I had for doggie pain...he finally went to sleep and THEN we could go back to bed. (I will need a nap today for certain) We were kind of worried, it was totally out of his character to act like that.
I even checked the stove and furnace for gas leaks...I released them to the front without their collars in case it was an intruder. He and Tammy checked every corner out there while I stood there with them. The sky was clear, almost no wind. I checked the fish tank sumps and hook-ups, the electric box. I couldn't find a thing out of the ordinary so I druged him...LOL

Don't you know! It was playtime!
I know your kidding...he was afraid and very worried. The only time I ever seen him react like that was when we first started using the electric fence, and a dump truck backing up across the street was beeping, and scared him so bad that a shock was imminent...he tried to climb on my lap. That is exactly how he was acting last night or should I say early this morning.
That's why I removed the collars and the batteries, thinking they were making a sound only the dogs could hear....but he remained freaked out, so that wasn't it.
I went out on the back porch to sniff and see if I could detect fire in the air or a gas smell from outside since we had the windows open...nothing. The dog only relaxed if me and my mother were in my room...not her room, my room only and even then he was digging his nails into the rug as he lay down with his head up and ears straight up staring at the door of my room...it was freaky and we couldn't figure out what he was worried about.
LOL...I have Mezuzah up so not evil spirits either.
Oh and Tammy was fine, she just got excited and started barking when we first removed the collars...she went to sleep.

He could have just had a nightmare. Maybe the dog did hear a noise near the house that alarmed him. Or maybe he was not feeling well and was restless.

Yes I considered all of those possibilities, so after I was sure there were no intruders to be concerned about, I gave him the pain med that made him tired, so if he was not feeling well and was restless or had a bad dream...the medication would help. He is 7 years old and I have had him since he was 9 weeks old...he has never acted like that before except the one time he was afraid of the trucks back up beep. Just weird, I sure hope to not have a repeat tonight.

Huh... very interesting. My dog has gotten up in the middle of the night whimpering and crying... probably a bad dream for her.. but who knows what it was for him?

Hi,
Last night was calm and normal, thank goodness. I guess since Atticus can't talk the whole thing will remain forever a mystery.
I did remove thier collars, just in case that was the problem, and they might sleep better anyway without them. After all, I hate binding clothes when I sleep, and since I consider him a hero...he should get more respect as a member of the household, than just a bone as a reward. We also had the AC on and shut the windows, in case it was a sound or smell from outside.
My Mother pointed out something I didn't pay much attention to, we realized it last night as we discussed the former nights events and how to prevent a repeat...remember I said only Atticus was acting weird. . I was saying that if Tammy had also been upset that I would have been much more concerned. That's when Mother pointed out that we knew Tammy wasn't upset because he had ushered her into my room as well. He had hearded everyone including Tam, into my room to keep us all safe from whatever he was worried about.
That means Atticus got all his loved ones into a cluster to protect. I imagine wolves would do that to protect the pack. Whatever the danger was, we may never know.

awww, that's so sweet!
I appreciate the dog is pretty smart and protective but 2:30am ....Just kill the boogieman and leave me to sleep.
...Suppose instead of being a good protector, he just wanted the boogieman to eat us first before it got to him.
That doesn't deminish the fact that he is smart...see to thine own butt first, kind of thinking comes to mind.

Not to sound crazy but I think dogs can see ghosts/spirits... sometimes they are scary... sometimes they want to play..
My moms house was built on an Indian Burial Mound...so when we visited her they would freak out in the house a few times...

To start with....I have Mezuzah on my door posts...no spirits besides the Angels come to my house. I don't believe in ghosts myself, I do believe in demons, and no spirit can enter any home uninvited. Each Sabbath I welcome the Angles and the Shekhinah ... I don't allow witch boards, tarot cards or any seances in my home. I don't allow pictures of the sun or moon with faces in them...I'm a spiritual nut about keeping evil out of my house....if something has pagan religious roots it is not a decoration, it is a thing to burn in a trash heap.
The Most Holy One, blessed be his name...sees all this, and knows He and He alone is honored in this home. I need not fear any ghost, gobblin, or demon, real or imagined.
Second, this happened one and only one time. A haunted place if you believe in that kind of thing, wouldn't come for a 2:30 in the morning visit and leave. I have been in this home 4 years, my dog has been here with me the entire time.

Your pup obviously sensed something was wrong whether you saw it or not. Whatever it was, he did his job and you were all safe! It always amazes me how our furry family members protect those they love! I have a black lab rottie mix who is the most lovable, cuddly dog ever. He normally sleeps on the floor in our room, but if one of the kids is up, or falls asleep on the couch, he will stay with them as they are not safe in bed. Doesn't matter how much he's coaxed, he won't budge and at 120lbs, not easy to forcibly move. He's my dog, and is usually found wherever I am, but looks after everyone. If someone is not home, he waits in the bonus room window and watches for them to come home, then races down the stairs and waits at the door for them to come in. Best greeting in the world!

Oh yes, the most loving greeting in the world is that of the family dog...it doesn't matter if you are gone a full day or an hour, they act like they haven't seen you in years. I always laugh when someone tells me they have a lab mix. My aunt had a lab, and he would get out and hop the fences like a gazelle and impregnated every female for miles around. The paper had a huge listing of lab mix with just about every other dog breed. I still see constant listings of lab mix, I figure they must all be Casanovas.
I used to live across the street from the elementry school and 3 of my grandkids used to live with me and went to that school. After they moved out, it had to be at least a month later, I noticed Atticus staring at the school when it let out one day. Intrigued, I stood there and watched him...He was at full attention ears pricked forward, in perfect german shepherd stance, I thought he saw something the way he stood there like a statue...he waited until every kid was on the bus, and every child had left, then he hung his head down like he was the saddest dog in the world and went into the house....Thats when I realized he was looking for his kids to come home from school ...I wonder how many times he had stood there looking for them before he realized they were not there anymore.

Oh that's so sad! Poor Atticus! Hope the kids still come for visits!!
My guy is fixed, so no carousing for him. He's not even interested, had him fixed before the testosterone really kicked in, just a bit of aggression was indication it was time. He's an awesome dog, finally out of the annoying puppy gotta chew everything stage....
Growing up, we had miniature schnauzers. Our first was Heidi, then we got Max. We lived in a place that didn't allow pets so my mom would sneak them out in hockey bags at night to take them for walks. One night Heidi got separated from my mom and tried heading back home. She was hit by a car a died instantly. We were all devastated but no one more than Max, he would sit in the window and watch for her for months. Say her name and he'd cry. we finally got another schnauzer and he finally seemed to move on.
Max got arthritis as he aged and when winters hit he, he had a hard time moving around, my parents always kept a heating pad on for him. One day they were bringing in groceries and he got out. They realized he was missing within minutes and went looking for him. They would ask people if they'd seen him, yep he went that way. Dad looked for hours, days, months, never found him. Figured he ran away to die. Months later, dad was working in the basement, he heard max's footsteps coming down the stairs, went to look nothing. My mom thought he was crazy, until a few months later they heard it at the same time together. Took dad a looooong time to get over losing his pup, they moved out of that house a few years after and have always wondered if anyone else has heard him.

For my dads 74th bday last year we got him a mini schnauzer puppy, Dallas. Omg, they were meant to be! Never seen a more spoiled dog ever! My dad was a grumpy old man before this dog, now he's happy, energetic, cracks jokes. Animals are amazing , can soothe the soul, protect, are beyond happy to see you whenever you come home and only ask for love in return. We figured we added years to my dads life, I'm lucky and blessed to still have him!
Ok sorry, feeling a little sentimental tonight....
