My e-mail to Instant Ocean...

and finally...
I sent them 3 emails :) I'm psycho... I know.
Hello,
I believe you have sent multiple emails to us, so I won’t go over the same things. You should expect Instant Ocean to average about 350. Natural seawater is not 400-450. If you wish to see elevated values to these numbers, I would make the switch to Reef Crystals.
Regards,
Instant Ocean

First off from Randy Homes-Farley
"Calcium in Seawater
Calcium is one of the major ions in seawater. It is present in seawater at about 410 ppm the world over, so it comprises just under 12% by weight of the solids. Variations from this concentration are most often caused by changes in salinity, where the calcium goes up and down just as the salinity does. Another cause for variation comes about from the input of rivers, which are often greatly enriched in calcium relative to other ions such as sodium. Calcium is also frequently enriched in hydrothermal vent water that is released on the bottom of the ocean. The calcium is dissolved from the hot basalt as the water passes through it, and is released to the ocean."
Secondly you have made a statement about the companies product, have sent multiple e-mails concerning it, IMO it is only right that you send in the sample so that they can:
1. Verify your readings
2. Discount your readings.
IMO you have come onto an open site on the internet making a claim against their product and you should follow through to some conclusion.

I agree. I'll send them a sample of the salt. I'm a little worried that they'll simply lie to me and say the salt shows perfect levels in 'their tests'... but they deserve the right to fight back against my claims in some way. They'll get their sample this week.

Well if you think they will lie, send me a sample and I will test it. Or just send me the whole bucket!

if they test at 1.026.why do the instructions tell you that the salt at 50 galons is 1.022? seems to me it shouldbe 350 calcium at 1.022 right?

^Well 1.026 is the SG of natural seawater, not 1.022. I personally have never had a problem using IO. I only have some LSP and softies though. I find it mixes quite well(I mix for 24 hours) and my calcium is at about 350-370ppm with no extra additives. My corraline algae grows like crazy.
Maybe you got a bad batch? Maybe there is another issue with your corraline bleaching?
I agree with Spanko though. It is good to have options :) But I also fully agree with you that IO should not claim "No special additives required" Sounds like puffery to me
I would send the salt sample to them to see if you had a bad batch.

I will certainly send it in. I plan to do it wednesday cause I have school today and I should be at work now instead of typing this :)
If I got a bad batch than I'm not the only one. So many complaints of low calcium with this salt. Search the web :)

Ok, so since reading this, it is time for my water change, and I decided to test it. I just mixed a fresh batch of reef crystals with a sg of 1.024 and my calcium is 440. I personally have not had any problems with reef crystals, and just wanted to share.

THere are companies out there that let you pay (probably dearly) to mix salt EXACTLY to your needs and keep you just as happy as can be. I personally would have to dose calcium, alk, and mag anyways regardless if the salt I recieved was perfect due to the calcium demands in my tank. 2 large clams and several large sps pieces have sucked all the coraline out of my tank and yes they can survive at calcium levels of 280 (oops). I've also have had thumbnail pieces of plating coral turn into vase size pieces in a year with fragging.
It almost seems like you have a personal vendetta against IO. IMO I've never had a problem or really noticed a difference between normal IO or reef crystals but I dose to maintain levels (except for the oops time). To each their own and how deep their pocket books are.
