My feather duster lost it's "head"

Can anyone tell me what is happening? The worm part (stem) seems to be well attached under a rock, but the flowing "feathery" part is on the sand, off the stem.
I read on another thread to take it out and smell it to see if it's dead by the stink. But that was for a duster that had split, not lost it's head. Not sure if I will do damage by pulling it from the rock.
Thanks in advance for your help!

i take it out but it wont hurt anything if you leave it in. your clean up crew will take care of it.

this usually only happens when its been stressed or transfered and in order to adjust it grows its crown back. If its been in your tank for a while and this just happened out of no where I would take it out and smell it, yes this is to see if its DEAD not splitting I don't know where you heard that from. If it stinks, its dead. Most likely from my experience when it does this, its dead. Unless its just been placed in your tank it might of just not of taken the move very well. But if been in your tank and looses it after a while its prob because its not getting enough food. Just my two cents!
