Fake the jab with the left (if you are right handed) and come around with a left hook. Works real well in amatuer boxing...they never see it coming.
If you are fighting a faster guy, don't waste a lot of energy trying to walk him down. Let him come after you and counter...

Wahooooo,
I have a hundred questions for you and I want the FULL play by play when your done. Dont try to play it like a video game or some cheesy movie where your trading spectacular power punches. You will see how controlled and smooth everything should go once your actually in the ring.
When everything goes into slow motion and its just you in the ring... (This method is quickly out lived once you go out of youth and collegate boxing as its a horrible habit and they try to break you from doing it) but.......... Screw trying to watch your opponants eyes or ect like your some zen master with years of training. That will come with time. You just want an edge.. Assuming you both are equally matched in exp then play on it for your first few fights,
Watch his shoulders, most new boxers either wind up for thier punches because thats what they think they "should do" but when you see a shoulder start to move back? instantly jab a quick straight. Even if you dont land you get the points and it screws the opponant up because hes expecting it to be like the movies where he can just wind up and use some corriagraphed routine on you like your going to stand there like his punching bag that he has been practicing on.
Do not think of this like he is your enemy, or phsyke yourself like you need to get some deep hatred from your belly and unleash it on the guy.
Treat it just like a game. Exactly like a game of move and counter move in science of boxing. Enjoy yourself and show good sportsmanship win or lose. Just flat out, outbox him and you will be hooked on the ring.
oh yeah, dont forget to stomp on the guy like a wet bag of groceries for me.
Oh you have to get some pics of you in your little headgear and gloves to share with us. Baby pictures.
Good luck and have fun and show heart

ill see if i can get my camara back by then but it proabbally wont since i lent it to my friend. he went to san diego i have no idea when hes comin back. if not ill throw the down the details. ah ok i gotta stop gettin over excited about this. ok imma jus go back to conditioning now. but seriously when u first meet ur trainer hes all mr nice guy. but behinde the scenes when hes training u hes a whole different person. i almost felt like i made a bad choice and felt like quiting while the first days of training....but lets see if this is the sport for me!
if its not then *exhales... i dont kno
ps. i just found out my reach is 26 inches.
my opponents reach is about 30.
CRAP..that gonna be a problem...?

Your measuring this how?
A boxers reach is often screwy. I have always known it as from your armpit to end of your knuckes with extended fist and fingers curled.
Finger tip to finger tip for pure stretch is also often commented on but its not really anythign beyond academic.
My reach was only 31inch and I am a pretty lengthy guy. Tip to tip was huge though I was 78.5 inch.
May I ask your weightclass? If someone is saying he has a 30 inch reach, then to stay in class he must be on the skinny side and very tall.....watch the jab. Get close and get his elbows in his own way. Especially if hes not a solid build.
I am so exited for you. And nervous is great, but dont ever be scared. You will do awesome.
And dont try to give me any of the crap about not having a camara present. I am going to need to see pics. Bribe someone to take some pics of it. Its not for bragging right it is for a piece of history!!!

go in being loose.
if you are nervous, you are going to try to think out and analyze every move and scenerio.
if you think.... you're dead.
your training will come out on its own when you are in the ring.
oh, and by the way. the 2 or 3 minutes per round is going to be the longest 2 or 3 minutes of your life.
and dont be afraid to lose. this is your first match.

jab, cross, jab, hook, jab
keep your shoulders and your guard up. Remember to bob and weave.
Give him a nice kidney shot for me.
Good luck!

now now, that should be saved in the back pocket with head butts and elbows. Only bring them out on special occassions.
Certainly not your time in the ring. Thats dirty pool..........lol besides he will most likley get caught and DQ'd for it.
Just try to have fun, an work on your flinching. Its totally normal when first beginning. Break that habit and you will be ahead of the pack.
I am so exited for you.
