My first Nano :)

Hello Everyone,

I have started my first nano! I am doing a twenty gallon. Even though its my first nano, that doesnt mean its my first tank. I have a 55 i have had for 4 years and a 75 as well that i have had for a month now :) I am a SWF Addict :) Ok back to the nano :) I started it by using live rock and water from my 55 to help it cycle faster :) I decided to go with a horseshoe shape it my tank, thinner rock through the back and thinker on the sides. Lots of little places for coral :) I have cycled the 20 , it went great, ready to move on. :) I have moved my clown fish and my manderin goby from my 55 to my 20 because it looked to empty. haha :) I have made my first order for my clean up crew, and it should be here wed. (in theory
) But i have ordered,
10 Turbo snails
10 Narsisius snails
20 blue legged hermit crabs
3 emerald crabs
4 assorted mushrooms
Yellow Polyps.
I plan on buying lots more coral, but havent decided on any yet. I know that about 4 months down the road, i want to make it a dwarf sea horse tank, have a mated pair :) but for now i want a few other little fish :) I know i want some Zoo's so bad!!! i found a site i am going to order then from. I am a sucker for bright gorgeous colors :) The Hood on my tank is an Eclipse Hood, and i fell in love with it at my LFS. Here are some pictures of my tank. Enjoy. Please let me know what ya think :)

Yeah, I know. I am moving some into my 55. I have never done a nano. So i didnt realize how much it would be
Good idea then.
My 12 gallon has 2 turbos, 3 hermits, and a couple nassarus snails and algae isn't an issue other then when I first set up the tank.

Good Luck with that, i satered mine 3 weeks ago and just added 6 blu legged crabs yesterday, Thats all im going to add for a couple of more weeks, I was going to get a skimmer also but 3 guys at the LFS said if i was going to prolong water changes it wouldnt be nessisary, Mine is a 24 gal with about 10 LBS of live rock so far.

Can you cut a hole in the hood? It looks like the front flips open.. can you reverse the hood and remove the 'flip' part so that you can add extra stuff? Could probably fit a refugium/skimmer that way.

It has Two flip things. I have NEVER seen a hood like it but i absolutly love it. If you want to look it up its called an " Eclipse Hood " The Front flap opens up to the lights, and the back one opens to the filter. Its really nice. I am just tring to think of an alternative because i see no way to get a skimmer in there.

I am going to buy a Tunze Protein Skimmer 9002 next week and I have been told that it will fit in the middle chamber in the back of the tank. I have a 28g Nano Cube. I am not sure how big the 20g chambers are though.

Yeah, its not. I got my order in today for SWF.com My new clown is doing GREAT he just swims around with my other clown. Its Cute :) I decided to leave all 20 snails in there. because i like to go with the 1 snail per gallon rule. I have 10 hermit crabs. 3 emerald crabs. and a little coral banded shrimp. I also have Ric. mushrooms. and some yellow polyps. Everything is open and crawling around and looks healthy and happy :)

1 snail per gallon isn't a rule.. it's a made up pretend stupid solution to algae that benefits only the sellers of the snails.
Sorry... but it'll end up causing snail deaths...
What kind of hermits are the 10? Watch the coral banded.. they're pretty aggressive.

Well, its always worked for me. So i figured until it proves me wrong, i will stick by it.
They are blue legged hermits
And the Coral Banded is small. And i have never had one get aggressive till they are big. So when i get my 55 back up and running i will move him there. But for now he is behaving...

Hey i wanted to comment on your thred of not putting in a skimmer on that hood eclpise. I did if you want to do away with that filter that comes with it.but, depends on what skimmer your going to use. i cut out the whole filter thing in there and left the light now i put in a skimmer and , now can put in a 24" light on top of the one thats there you know the flip thing that comes up after the light hint hint. on my nano tank i did it also. was very proud of myself, Cause i didnt think it was possible with this hood, but all i had to do was move a ballast and cut and remake the clear cover for it, and it worked out. heres the pics , BTW i think i have pics of when i did the Ecplise hood if you want.

here you see i cut out the hood on the left and made the changes

with the white tape is weather stripping to keep the moister out.

And with out any real visiabal damage the hood looks like it was made that way to anyone who sees it.
