My first salt tank was setup today. have ????

I just setup my first saltwater tank today. I used crushed coral but have been reading that may have been a mistake. Why?

CC traps wastes and harbors nitrates.

ur not the only one..i have 2 bags of cc sittin around.. im gonna try makin some homemade rocks eventually... so its not just a total waste of money...

I would, and I think most people on here would advise you too. Do a search on here and read some of the past threads about sand vs. CC. But if you decide to switch it out, it will much easier now as opposed to later.

What if you vaccum the coarl will that take care of the problem or just a pain in the neck?

You can add a bag of live rock and some live sand to the mix. The organisms found in those will make a new home quickly in the CC.

the cc will work its way to the top as the sand settles.. then when u vaccum the cc, it will suck up not only your filtration, but will pick up sand too... better off switchin now to be better off in the long run..

You can add LS but the coral will eventually work it's way to the top and still trap stuff underneath.

Don't feel bad I did the same thing, then I found this web site and everyone has been a big help. I have removed the CC and the UGF and added 60# of live sand and about 25# of premium sand.

I was told wait a week check my levels (that im still learning about) then add live rock and that will be fine. I hear so many different things from friends books ect....

Dont know what LR is? I don't think anything is ready I just got done about 4hrs ago. I was going to read what to do next I have test kits but need to practice and learn how to use them.

If you do not know what l/r is (stop) look at Archiver&faq (Beginner)by beth it will help.
