I got this 40 gallon for free without a desent stand and no top, so I built both for 60 dollars total.

Looks very nice. One question, why did you use different wood for your canopy? The stand looks like it is made out of knotty pine, and the top looks like birtch or something similar.

I made the canopy first with wood from one store and the stand later on from another store and it was the cheapest wood in stock they had. I am currently starting a 135 gallon stand and canopy and plan on using oak the whole way around. I used golden oak stain on the stand and canopy. It was my first attempt so I didn't put alot of care into staining since I was not extremely happy with the end product. I probably will sell the setup anyways one of these days and I know that I won't get much for it.

Wow very nice. I got a question for you. I am going to build a canopy for my 55 in the next couple of weeks and I am trying to come up with a plan of how to go about doing it. Did you get the pieces precut to the dimensions you needed?

If you buy the wood at lowes, they will cut it for you. I would make the front piece as wide as the tank . Mine has the sides visible and that was just me measuring wrong. I used a table router to round the edges.
