Hello everyone,
I just bought a used 46-55 gallon glass tank with stand from the flea market for 40 dollars and to my surprise not a single leak.My goal is to have a saltwater tank with live rocks and plants and fish. My first question is how do i prepare the tank before i put in live rock and sand etc?It could have diseases, also what is best way to clean the glass?
I really need to learn more I need web links please...for other information rich sites like this.
I would like to know what books or magazines to get for this hobby that are good.
I would like to know what online stores you guys like for buying supplies.
I would like to know a good store for buying 100 gallon plus acrylic fish tanks.
I would like a link to websites that do product reviews so i know what equipment to buy and how they perform Id rather pay more to protect my investment.
I have bought one book called" the contientious marine aquarist". Im not sure if is a good book or not just got it today.
I have always loved aquariums and now i have the bug.
I would really appreciate anyones links and help so please post replys thank you:)

Welcome to the boards! Really no need to go anywhere else. There are a bunch of smart folks here that are always willing to help.
We as members are NOT allowed to post links to other competative sites so if you want to shop use google more info then you can handle.
CMA is a great book to start JMO its the best, read it ,learn it, live it. There are many others and I'm sure many will chime in on books. You can NEVER read and research to much.
As far as buying stuff SWF is a great place, I don't think i've heard anything bad......
If you want product reviews just do a search on here. Lots of us have used different equipment and products and are not afraid of telling you how we feel about them. Of course in a nice way. I've been a member here and on other sites. I find that here people are most polite and we have nothing to gain by our opinions.
You have to decide what you want to keep. Fish only with live rock and live sand or a full reef. This decision will determine what we recommend.
Do you know what was in the tank previously? Best way to clean the tank is with a white vinegar solution and water, DO NOT use any cleansers. You will need to read on how to cycle the tank to get it ready for what you want to keep.
Again do some more research on the things you like/want. then come back with more detailed questions.
The search function can be your best friend. If you can't find it ask here.
Again Welcome!
HTH

Thx for posting man i appreciate it. JMO is the best what does that stand for?
I thought having rocks and plants ,fish and live animals on the rocks was a reef..to clarify what is the difference between what i said and what a reef system actually is as i must not have a correct understanding but i think the answer is yes i want it to be as close as possible to a natural environment with fish.

JMO = just my opinion. FOWLR emphasis on fish, more of them and less water quality req'd. Reef tank is some fish, live rock, live sand and emphasis on corals. Corals require high water quality (maybe skimmers, filter, sump, refugium depending on the corals), more expensive lighting and steady temperature (possibly chillers, fans, heaters, etc. again depending on what corals). Welcome to the Board.
