Someone I know has a 30 gallon aquarium thats been set up for about two weeks. This is their first swf aquarium so there not experienced. They also don't research before they get which i think is going to kill them in the long run. They have two medium pieces of live rock that don't have A TON of living things on them and two bags of live sand thats comes to about a half of an inch over or less from the black thing on the bottom of the aquarium. They got a madarin today which i don't think was a good idea. How long will it take for it to starve if it doesn't eat the frozen food?

About a month or so. Depends on what it was eating at the LFS if the LFS was feeding it pods probly a month if they couldnt get it to eat then less time.

Lets just say they have some money to spend. lol. I told them not to get one but they just got it. They also got a shrimp, two clown fish, a sleeper goby and some kind of phseodochromis the third day they had the tank. They got all of it without research too.

well even if the mandarin did have a chance alone, with all those at once, no way possible, their tank is going to crash!

definitely should have researched it a bit. they need a mature tankthat has a lot of live rock. i'm talkin at least 100 pounds for adequate food grazing. it probably won'tdo them any good to return it as most die in the stores anyways. if they know somebody, maybe you, that has a lot of live rock to keep it for a while, while they get their tank situated until they are mature and lots of live rock thenthat would be the best thing to do.

Has the tank even cycled yet????
They are definitely set up for dissapointment... its too bad they are most likely going to lose most if not all of the fish. As hard as it was for me to be patient, I still lost species in the 1st few mos. It is a learning process, and even the most experienced hobbyists learn something here and there. I wish them the best of luck, and hopefully they may take your advice after netting those poor lifeless creatures

I would be pretty pissed off at them if you told them not to do this and why, and they did it anyway! Its not like they were uninformed! They deserve the crashed tank, just feel bad for the poor fish, hell with the money they threw away! People like this give the saltwater hobbiest a bad name!!!

Like i said they're Idiots.
(no offense) did they even put salt in the tank? or hook up the basic stuff you need to even run a SW tank? Seems like the kind of people that will buy a 100 dollar fish without researching because it looks pretty, then wonder when it died why i did.
" but we put salt in there and we fed it fish flakes twice a day like the directions said it must of been sick already"

No No Mr.p sometimes that happens expecially in the tangs and scooter blennies (family of the manderin). As they feed them flakes and who knows how long they are there and when you buy them there starved todeath and die in your tank. Dont get me wrong this is no reason to buy a fish without research or to buy that many fish for any size tank that quick. But it dose happen.

well, the fish died today. I told him to do research and he said he would. i was gonna keep it but i didn't get it in time. I was pissed cause they killed a fish when they could have saved it by just going on to the internet to look a fish up to research it. And i got pissed cuase they could get all of those fish at one time withough worrying about the expenses, i don't know about u but i'm 14 and i have to get one thing at a time cuase of the money.

how incredibly sad and disturbing at the same time, well i hope maybe you forwarded this thread to his email.......maybe it'll kick em in the butt, then again as you said they have no concern because they have money to do what they will, chances are they'll go buy another one.

I help them set up the tank so the tank itself is good, but the fish and crap like that as u can see i had no control over.

Im 17 and I go one step at a time. (good time to start when your young) you usually start in a hobby and it just takes over and you just cant stop and you cant afford alot at one wack so you can overstock lol. I havent gotten anything for my tank in almost 2 months lol.
Thats sad on the fish you need to send them this link and I wouldnt care if they get mad. There is no need to go and buy fish just to kill them. I agree it is ppl like that that give us reef freaks a bad name.
