My gf's setup

This will be the first summer that I will be running the mh, but I'm not taking any chance relying on a couple of fans. The temp in the tank was over 90 last year with only the PC's, imagine what it will be this year with the mh, I got a chiller running that will kick on as soon as the water temps go above 82.

The answer to your question is yes and no, it will keep it cool during the cooler months but I expect the temp to soar way up when the hot summer months is here.

Plenty of fans and open space in canopy for ventilation. Keep tank in aircondition room if possible. Does wisconsin get hot like new york in the summer?

Sure, just keep the light at least 8 or more inches above surface and you should be fine. Your tank can still survive the summer months even if water temp is in the mid 80's, just make sure the water temp does not fluctuate too much.
btw, if this is for your 55, I would have gone with the 175 instead.

I have 2x250s on my 110 and all I have is 2x6" fans from wal-mart, the clip-on kind. I am in Oklahoma and it stays about 90-105 in the summer months. Keep the house at 75 with the fans and eveything if good. I know I have a considerable more amount of water, but if you have a sump and overflow for water to pass by, with a fan blowing across the sump too, then I think you would be ok. 8 fans is alot, my gf's tank doesn't have any yet and it doesn't get too hot. Also I am with him 8" is plenty for the lights above the water. Do you have a sump?

The height of a 55 is about 21" if I'm not mistaken, same as my 46. When you add the sand, then the height from surface to sand bottom could be any where from 16 to 18" depeding on how deep is your sandbed. A 175 should be enough to light up your tank for the corals and or clam. You can alway put the higher light demanding subjects higher up in the tank to compensate. This will help with the heat issue. It should be enough even if you have the clam on the bottom but if you're worried about it, then put the clam higher up on the live rocks so it'll be closer to the light source.
