My gorgonians

Here are some pics of my gorgonians. I collected this three myself. Yes, they are legal to collect, you can not collect any sea fans however. I also have a purple sea whip, (purchased from a LFS) that is shedding at the moment and will post of pic it shortly (sorta see in the FTS).

Muricea sp.

Muriceopsis flavida

Pterogorgia guadalupensis

FTS

I think I'm right on the species names? The Pterogorgia still hasn't opened up fully. Read on advancedaquarist that Pterogorgia
and Pseudopterogorgia
are some of the tougher to keep gorgs? But I've had the purple whip for over a year now. We'll see I guess, still adjusting I imagine.

Yep, all of them (the ones individually pictured) I collected. The purple whip from the LFS is directly under the BTA's in the full tank shot (barely see it, just some sticks). They were about 100-200 yards off the beach, 6-10 feet of water.

Nice gorgs, I have the last one and it's doing ok, I got it in Dec? I think, it probably needs more light and flow than I have currently so I'm hoping it hangs on until I upgrade. What size tank is this? Looks big.

I feed them cyclopeeze and 'coral frenzy' every once in a while. I've had them for 3 weeks.
Tank is a 125. Yea, dunno what is it, but it does look large(r) for/then a 125.

So far great! The Pterogorgia guadalupensis especially. I relocated it and t's nice and out all of the time now and is just finishing up shedding for the first time. Will see about some new FTS and pics when I get home tonight. Tank is slightly rearranged, I abandoned the arch in the center for now and have some more corals.

All photosynthenic gorgonians require adequate lighting. One of the Purple Whips was kept in my parents tank with only PC's for over a year, so not all of them require MH's, but not sure if I'd chance trying other species. All of the other's I collected were in less then 8 feet of water, so they recieve extremely bright light in the wild. Everything I've read has put them pretty much with idenitcal needs as SPS and I won't keep them in tanks with poorer water quality. But like every other creature found in the Atlantic, I'd imagine that they're pretty hardy

I like your rock work !

How many pound of live rock do you have in it ? And did you have to use rods ?

Here are a couple of pics, not too happy as most of the gorgs are pretty closed in the pics from repositioning them. And you can see the rock formation. That arch was just the rocks resting there and it's fallen numerous times, so with having to place that big toadstool somewhere, resorted to this. Also redid the very right behind the big gorg, couple big LR pieces, one that was cover in Xenia, the Blueface ate clean!

Fishies

If you look at this shot of the Muricea sp.
compared to the one in the first shot, you can see all the growth. All of the lower stalks are now close to the same height, and there's lots and lots of new buds forming.

The SPS is looking sweet too!

Missed your question. If I had to guess, I'd say north of 180lbs. The left side has a couple of 15lb boulders as the base pushed into the sand, the huge shelf rock is 40lbs., and about another 50lbs or so on top. There is a 15lb shelf rock on the very right, and probably 60lbs of medium pieces making up the tower/former arch. Yep, I used clear arcylic rods for the right tower, with a masonry bit I drilled into each rock about 3", and used a 6" piece of rod to hold it together.

Was asked to post some updated. Most of the gorgs are doing great. Only the little flavida has a bit of necrosis. The lights went out for about 10mins before I kicked them back on for the 'show your xmas tree thread." So they're not 100% extension, but close. Enjoy!

No, still just the occasional feeding of Coral Frenzy. I think finally I got all of the gorgs in a place they like. I'll eventually have to move the P. guadalupensis though when the caps grow.
