My HOB filter refugium project

I recently set up this little HOB refugium out of my emperor filter I had been using for water movement only. I wanted a place for macro algae and didn't want to go with any unsightly in tank options. I think it turned out ok. I still may make some adjustments to it, but for now it seems to be working and the macro is growing nicely.
Here is a shot of the emperor emptied and cleaned with the eggcrate in place. Notice the removal of the bio-wheels.
Here is a picture showing the rock rubble in place:

Over all the project was very simple. I deleted the bio wheels by plugging the holes with aquarium putty. The light I am using is a single 18w 12" current PC fixture with dual daylight bulb for better growth. The hardest part was modifying the light stands to fit the filter. I did this by slowly heating up the plastic stands and stretching them until they allowed me enough adjustment to fit the tank. Any questions, comments and suggestions are welcomed

Thanks! Kinda the same principle here. My plan is to remove the blobs of macro every other water change and rinse the detritus build up off as best as possible. So far everything seems to be working as planned

Thanks, I was initially going to just toss mine as well. Then I got to thinking about it, and saw another post where a guy turned his aquaclear into one, so I just had to try it. There really isn't much to it, and seems to be working well. I'd recommend it to anyone who has the means to do so.

This thread is exactly what i was looking for! I wanted to mod my emperor and ditch the bio-wheel and filter cages and make a fuge out of it. and now i know how exactly. thanks!
Your tank is awesome btw, i found you in the nano pics thread and saw the filter mod, sure enough you had a thread for it!
i have it on a 10 gallon, do you think it will work?
