Well im guessing since no one in this message board has one and that no one ever talks about them that i shouldnt even bother. This is the same LFS that sells bluerings and jellyfish. taking pictures werent allowed in the store(for some obvious reasons). I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this creature. I didnt even know they still existed till now. Looks very cool.

I was visiting a wholesaler in LA last week with a freind that owns a LFS. They had several, and they looked really cool. When I asked him about them his advice to me was to leave it in the ocean. He knows some people who work at the monteray bay aquarium, and they havn't even been successfull in keeping them alive.

Where they labeled as PAPER NAUTILUS? If so, these are not Nautilus at all........they are actually a different species of octopus that can be found in the same regions as the Blue-Rings that your LFS has.
I still don't like the stuff that they carry there...........are they just looking for suckers to come and buy that stuff to kill it? :(

There is a Naut. tank at the Research Center that I volunteered at. They are really cool, and love to be hand fed. But yes, they do best in a species only tank, with dark coverings as they can only see light and dark. The constant bright light would eventually destroy optic sensors.

geez, its under Metal Haildes , those jerks, now i hate that store even more! it was just floating in one corner like it was sleeping
I dont know if it was a paper, but i dont have any pics to prove it was or wasnt. It had a red and white shell and it floats, inside is like squid, it retracts its tenticles

Thats playing with fire hand feeding these guys even though they readily eat from your hand, its just a matter of getting stabbed by their beak that's dangerous....If I'm correct don't they have something like 90+ tentacles

I have read a good bit about these guys. Whoever said about their optic sensors being destroyed was right. They do belong only in the ocean. They come to the surface at night because of low light and in the daytime go to incredible depths to escape the light. There is no way you could provide an environment such as this for these creatures.

Yeah, they have a ton of sticky tentacles, and yes, their beak is very sharp, but they grab the food with thier tentacles, and then pull it in, so as long as they get the shrimp before they get your finger, you are ok :D

That really stinks. You should say something to the owner. We keep ours in a tank with a black tarp over it all the time, unless we are feeding, and even then only the top is exposed. They prefer colder water also, and I'm sure the Haildes don't help that any. Not very good for a LFS if you ask me. :(

If I were you I would take pictures anyhow w/o flash...they'll never know. Check with your local authorities because hopefully selling them is unlawful.

the tank is right infront of the register. They suck, they dont know anything and they overcrowd their tanks with inverts and fish to the point where its out of control. Copper is obviously being used since i saw it where you get the net

yeah these guys are ddpewater dwellers that do like cooler temps....im surprised that they dont have buoyancy difficulties in captivity, then again they probably do cause non last long enough to care for.....truly a shame
good luck

My LFS has a few chambered nautilus. and from the description what you saw was a real nautilus, entice. they sell them for 159.99. From what you described for their needs though, mine takes good care of them. I'm lucky to have found such a great fish store, sometimes the owner even lowers the prices for me. :) :p
