My LFS pushing crushed coral...

We've been into our LFS about 4 times in the past week getting a little here and there as we start our new tank. And every time we go they tell us we need crushed coral along w/ sand. I've read mostly bad stuff on it and don't want to use it. Then my husband listens to the guy and goes along w/ him. I just wonder if its so bad, why are they pushing it on us?

Because if you buy it then they can sell you a vacuum to clean it up and all kinds of chemicals to combat the trapped food particals that make your tanks water quality go down.
That, or nobody is buying the stuff, and they want rid of the abundant extra they have in stock.
Get aragonite dry or live sand or live reef sand from SWF. That way the CUC of snails, starfish and other critters will keep it clean for you and the food will be consumed by them. Not to mention the cool critters that need sand to live in and not crushed coral. If hubby purchased the CC...take it back and go to another store from now on.

I personally like the sand it gives the tank a more natural look and like flower mention the cool critters that need sand to live in

Stores often time will negotiate lower prices of certain products. However, it usually comes with compromises from both ends. Sometimes it means, pushing a certain product so the sales rap for the company they bought it from can get increased sales, while also providing a lower price for another product.
I am in the nightclub industry, take Jameson for instance, we wanted to get it for a lower price, so we call the rep they come in and sit down we hammer out the details. Bingo, the next day Jameson fliers and banners and posters are everywhere, their drinks are now a "feature" at our bar and anytime someone orders a whiskey it's always suggested they order Jameson by the Bartenders.
This happens in a lot of industries, they may be trying to push as Flower said old inventory on a customer they may think is a one or two time customer.
I faced this same what I now consider insulting behavior when I first started out. Thankfully I have a Local Reef Club and forums like these that helped me save a lot of money.
Best way to beat your spouse is to provide facts, otherwise it's just opinions...
I've had to tell mine several time, no, it makes for an strange ride back home, but I know that what's best for the tank and she will make impulse buys for "pretty colors"

Thankfully, I talked the hubby out of it. And if it wasn't for this forum, I would've already done 99% of what we have done wrong! When I'm not sure on something, I always look here first!

My first SW tank the LFS also pushed the crushed coral....a month later I was swapping it out for the sand. The stuff looked horrible 24/7 and no CUC I got could clean it up.

When I started my first marine tank in 1975 I used crushed coral - that's all there was. I used it for many years, vacuuming it pretty much every week and watching lots of beautiful wrasses wither and die (probably because they were either unable to burrow in the substrate, or if they did, they injured themselves on the sharp edges). When I got interested in reefs I learned about the joys of a sandy bottom, and would never go back. I just set up my 220 FOWLR, and my melanarus wrasse is happy and thriving, and so am I!

Your experience is the best explanation for why not use it....

Love mine, although when I added my Lineatus Wrasse she almost got yanked out the tank. Was very aggressive at first. Now they swim together, was a rough couple days and a lot of worry for me.

There are benefits with each.
Keep in mind that sand still needs to be maintained with not only critters, but an occasional stirring and light gravel vac'ing of the sand bed. Just like crushed coral, sand can also build up waste and needs to be maintained or else it leaches nitrates and phosphates back into the water two to five years down the line (depending on bioload).
Sand looks better than crushed coral, I'll give it that. But I was never able to push the amount of water flow I wanted through my tanks without stirring it up. I've finally talked myself into going barebottom a few months ago and I tell yah, I will probably never go back.

Flower, I'm also regretting the purchase of CC. How did you accomplish removing all of it? I've got a lot of little blue legged hermits and other things that I'm worried I might pitch...

Well...It's been some time. If I remember correctly our tank was not up very long and it was safe to remove it and just add live reef sand, which I used because of the loss of good bacteria that was already established on the CC. I removed the fish to buckets for the duration, as for the crabs I gathered all I could find. I'm sure I missed some. Wear gloves, and sift thru the CC to try and save any critters you find.

I've got sand underneath the crushed coral. Just added it for looks on top of the aragonite, which I now seriously regret. I think my aragonite would probably pass as live sand now. The tank has been active for over 125 days. I don't want to do anything to stress the fish right now (see cleaner post from earlier), but I may give this a shot in a few weeks. I was thinking about covering up the cc with a layer of sand, but then I still couldn't get any sand burrowers, which I now want.
