Thanks guys/gals !
Still looks funny to me - sort of too tall for the tank.
Might get used to it - but I don't see canopies this tall too often.
Comments welcome - honest opinions - for real !
Is it too tall LOL :p
It's almost as big as the STAND ! :(

Looks good to me on the tank. If you still don't care for it, I've got two ideas, depending on how big the space is between the top of the canopy and the ceiling:
1) Extend the canopy all the way up to the ceiling - this might make it look more like part of the wall.
or
2) (this is a much better idea) Mount a couple of TV's on top of the canopy......That way you can watch your tank and both the NFC and AFC games at the same time! (I'm getting all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it....

looks awsome broomer I would have to be standing there to tell if it is too tall but by the pic it looks good.if you dont like the hieght and the ceiling is not that much higher I would run it up to the ceiling it would really look great

Thanks for the comments ...
One last question regarding this late obsession of mine, then I promise I'll leave you all alone.
After a few days of trying to get used to it, the darn thing still looks like my grandma's cedar chest with a lower sock drawer, sitting up on top my tank.
I'm considering the "hand-saw" idea, lowering the canopy this weekend - and have it look more like the pic below ? Still not sure yet though - and would really appreciate either positive or negative feedback from you guys/gals.
Doing so would place the halides about 8 inches above the water surface. VHO maybe 3-4 inches for actinics.
Would still allow for opening the front door, just would lose the open framework with removable panals :( but gain some light intensity at the bottom of the tank I'm sure.
Yea or Nea ?? What do you think ??
Opinions more than welcome

I think both ways look fine. But if it were up to me I would choose the second. Like your saying........Your tank......Your choice!!

I have to admit, the second way looks better to my eyes. But the idea about running it all the way up doesn't sound bad either. Tough call. I think I'd probably cut it down some.
There's my 2 cents. But you know the old saying............. Broomers tank- Broomers choice!
Let us know what you decide,
Bobby

your initial canopy was great.
but, as you already mention, it's a bit too tall.
It's will look better after you shorten it.
It's a good idea to remove the bottom doors. But you need also to think about your accessing point to the tank. Seen those lower doors are your initial plan for accessing into the tank.
Honest, opinion, :)
I never like the bulky canopy on top of the tank accept it is a room devider tank with capinet on top.
How od you plan to remove the bottom part?
Table saw?
keep us posted

Okay - I've heard enough - thanks for the honest opinions.
I value all of your viewpoints - more than you know.
And I gotta say - I'm anxious to get this thing finished LOL.
I can lay this contraption on the floor, clamp a miter-box or 2 pieces of wood to each leg, and saw a straight cut across each of these six "legs". It'll take 12 fairly precise cuts.
Take out the section where the removable doors are now located.
Drill holes in each of the flat exposed mating leg surfaces - and insert a short dowel rod connecting them to each other, to keep them from shifting side-to-side. Like a wooden pin in a broken leg.
Couple screwed on vertical metal braces to each leg should keep it all snug.
Might glue - probably won't.
Will allow open back up 3 inches for incoming ventilation air, blowing warm air out the top as before. This will give me the room I need for external overflow box, and spraybars along the back of the tank/wall.
Will still have access through the front hinged door for day to day maintenance and feedings. Should be easier to lift off being shorter - for the more demanding maintenance or making inside tank changes.
Some new external 3-4 inch skirting around the bottom will insure no light escapes to the room.
Should do the trick ! Sounds like a plan. Did I miss anything ?
Saturday morning - another run to Home Depot. I can hear them now ........ "here's comes that crazy fish tank dude again" - and all the employess will scatter like rats on a sinking ship !
Thanks again y'all ;)

Hey Broomer canopy looks great! I hope you don't mind I am going to put a couple pics of my canopy on this thread. I don't know how tall yours will be once you chop it down but mine is 18 inches from top to bottom.
I think your probally going to cut it. So I would have to say I think it will look even better if you add some knobs to the front door to add a little flair. Oh yeah where are you going to put your ballasts for the lights?

Nice canopy slick !
I have some wood left over so I made a small vented rack enclosure for the ballasts, wires and timers. Just going to set it on floor next to stand.
Yeah - I hacked it. Here's what's happening over here this fine morning. Looks like it will end up being about 15 inches tall.
Pic 1
Hacking away on first leg - took 20 minutes for the first one, 5 minutes each for the other five.

Looks great great Broomer. It still may take awhile to get use to such a tall cannopy. I know it did at my house but after a few days you will love it. :)

What's left of the original bottom frame - using it again.
Coffee mug is appropriate for my mood this morning.
