ok so i bought a lion fish a few months ago and every week this guys seems to eat one of my fish. it ate my 2 clowns one of my yellow tangs, two damsles, a fire fish and a few others i no longer remember. what should i do with this fish? the only thing it hasnt eaten is my banded shrimp. is there a fish that will stand up to this guy or should i just get rid of him (i.e. give him back to the store- for free)
thanks for any help

Depends on what you want. If you like the lionfish, get something at least as big as he is. All depending on tank size of course.
Next step....do a little research before buying something for the tank. Would have saved yourself a bunch of money.
If you don't want the lion, take it back to the store for credit.

the tang i had in there was just a little bit smaller then he was. i did do some research and i didnt find anything that said he would eat all of my fish. the only thing i found is that it could eat some weaker fish. but all the small ones were so fast i didnt think it would be a problem. but that tank i was shocked that the lion fish got him cuz of the size. any fish you would recomend that will stand up to the lion

how often are you feeding him? the 2 that I've had didn't bother any of my other fish. including damsels

I don't know what you read, but the fact is that a lionfish is an ambush predator that will eat anything that will fit, and will scare the bejeesus out of fish that are too large by trying to eat them anyway. I once had to remove an inflated pufferfish that was stuck in the mouth of a lionfish...not fun.

it is about 2-3 times a day. durring the week its once at 8:30 am and 6:30pm. and on the weekends its 3 times 7:30am, 12:30pm, and 6:30 pm. so i dont know y he likes to eat all my fish, but he is one expensive fish. the joke at my house is that i buy fish and raise them to feed another.. and it totally suux cuz my 2 clowns i had were almost 7 years old, and they were huge

Since you put it that way...if it were my tank. That lion would be yard art.

Ya COOL... let's hurt a fish because the owner didn't research properly. And no matter what you say, you did not.... you can search google and come up with a million sites that tell you it will eat anything it can fit in it's mouth.
"They will eat smaller fish when introduced to the lion."
"It may eat smaller fish, shrimp, and other crustaceans in the tank."
"Lionfish are generally peaceful, but should not be trusted with tank mates that are small enough to fit into their mouths."
From this site: "They can be kept with any fish of the same size or larger. Small fish will likely be eaten."
I think their irresponsible owner should be lawn art.
I know y'all are kidding about hurting the fish.... but is ANYONE surprised a volitan ate a smaller fish than himself?

i wasnt gonna kill him but i was very mad that he ate so much. i should have gotten rid of him after he ate the first fish, but cuz he look so good i figured i would give him a chance. so it really is my fault. so i will be on the look out for larger fish. would a full sized yellow tang be able to survive with him? or should i look for larger fish

I'm having a very hard time believing the lion ate that tang..... Don't mean to be undermining but are you sure there isn't anything else going on there? Did you witness the lion eating those other fish?? Does anyone else hold my views on this as well? I've lost a few fish that have never been found in my system from my more ignorant days that have never been found thanks to a NASCAR pit crew like cleaning crew in my tank.... Just my 2 sense, but how are your water parameters??

125g the size i would think for the lion fish is about3-5 in. with all his fins. and i think about a 4-6 in tang, if i can find one that big

I have a full grown lion... he will indeed eat anything.....
But if it wasn't witnessed it defiately can't be assumed the fish were eaten Lions are very hardy fish so it would also make sense that he would be one of the last men standing if the tank had problems.

Lion is a predator. In consideration of the other fish you may also consider who can compete for food without becoming lunch themselves. I had a panther grouper, snowflake eel, emperator angel, and a flounder eye all of these were of considerable size though. Had no issues. Feeding is a lot of different debates. Too much too little, all I have seen points to once every 3 to 4 days is sufficient. In the wild the lion probably doesnt eat 3 times a day. Much of his time is spent hunting where he may or may not score. I wont tell you that I didnt make my own mistake. When I set up my first tank I lost a blue damsel after they were in the tank together for about 6 months. Unfortunately the small guys dont stand a chance.
