Everyone raves about how easy this stuff is to keep, but every time I put this coral in my tank, that's what it does in less than a months time and then just slowly melts away.
Good luck

Yep, I have two 15 gallon nanos that are exactly the same and I bought 2 frags of xenia from the same tank at the lfs at the same time and put one in each tank. One thrived and has easily tripled in size, the other did okay for about a month and then died. No idea why that happened, water tests consistantly for the two tanks are the same, same maintenance and the same lights.
I've only know one person so far that couldn't keep his pulsing xenia under control. It grew like crazy. His tank was kind of dirty since he never did a water change or checked his parameters. I think something was going on that his xenia liked. Mine looked like yours right before it melted away.
IMO...The crab is killing the Xenia. It is stressed not dead.
I had Xenia melt away, it was because I had old lights. There was nothing left but a snot spot on the rock. I replaced the bulbs and would you believe that in a month Xenia began to grow from that spot...first tiny little somethings, like sprouts.. then one day my eyes could make it out for sure...XENIA! That new growth now covers one side of my tank. That was 4 years ago.
LOL...I love Xenia, but have bad luck with it...I had 4 stalks growing in the 54G on small rocks cause I was gonna put some in my other tanks, and one morning it shriveled up.....now ALL of it is gone....GRRRR
