Thanks for the info.. LIVE CLAMS??? where do you get this at? I have a derasa in there now.. but he shows no interest in it... Could I go to the local seafood market and get some oysters or something and crack them open.. or something??? how could he eat a live closed clam... it would have to be opened right??
thanks for the info!
Strange, even a psuedo expert would know about or where to get live clams for feeding. Atleast one would think?
To anyone reading this thread, this fish requires a MINIMUM of a 300 gallon tank stock full of Live Rock and a mature tank at that. The 75 Shawntz has this fish housed in is very insufficient. So much for his "research".

This is the "If everyone says it cant be done, Im gonna prove them wrong" After the hardest species to keep & to hell what anyone says. Pretty sad in my opinion. Sittin on a pretty high horse there... expert!
Good luck to the fish.

kbaz this argument has gone over three threads. We are not saying hes a horrible fishkeeper for getting the fish. BUT for the last week we have all (like 10 of us) tried to strongly discourage him from gettin this fish, but he has ignored all of our facts and information and sitll gotten one, that is why we are criticizing his decision. If you don't already know the moorish idol is incredibly difficult to keep and as of now is really a mystery. Most peoples moorish idols die after 1 year instantly, no one knows why, and we realyl don't know what the 'missing element" of this fish is quite yet, after we told him how difficult it was and how it tank would not be good for it, he got it.

hey fishman,
I see where all of you are coming from and I do believe you want the best for the fish...I just feel a little nervous now about posting questions/comments about my fish (when we finally do get them) because of all the negativity.

as long as you don't pick a moorish idol and as long as you listen to what we have to say and listen to our experience/oppions and don't just completetly ignore us, you'll have nothing to worry about!!

Fishman,
I've been reading thru all the posts and taking notes...I want to have as much knowledge as I can. I do appreciate all your (and the others) knowledge and wisdom. And as much as I love Morish Idols I don't think I would attempt to keep one. I will just continue to admire there beauty from a far...

kbaz, dont let this thread be discouraging to the hobby, it should be considered informative. read these threads with an open mind, but you still must use common sense.

125 gallon not yet set up... here is what we have purchased so far....
120 Gal tank and stand 72" x 18" x 18" Oak stained
6 foot VHO Lighting system with one 10,000K daylight and one Actinic bulb.
Lighting system powered by Icecap Ballast.
Lighting is built to match stand.
Red Sea Berlin Turbo XL Protein Skimmer with Mag 5 pump.
Additional Mag 5 pump for water return, from sump system.
55 gal sump tank, split into 3 sections.
Large box of bio balls for sump system.
Overflow box, with hose.
All hoses and pvc piping to connect pumps and overflow box.
I really don't like the stand & the DIY attempt at a canopy so we want to either build our own or have it built before doing anthing else.
What do think of the equipment so far? I know I need atleast 4 powerheads and heaters....anything else some to mind?

Kbaz, as F1shman stated this discussion has gone over many threads to a lot of our dismay. In general you can find very helpful people willing to give any and all information regarding fish. Do not be afraid. We have no vested (monetary) interest when we give advice so generally you take the advice or information at face value. The majority of us only totally dfiscorage keeping a couple species of fish. Most in the aquarium industry we condone the keeping of. Our whole point is to give enough advice for an individual to provide the BEST environment for their fish so as to have success.
Shawntz has ignored this repeatedly.
Moorish Idol facts.
99% of them die in the home aquarium.
Only 10% make it a year in the home aquarium.
50% die in the first 2-3 months.
Mainly for unknown reasons.
The ones that made it a year are generally housed in VERY LARGE systems in 300 gallon range. With 200-300 lbs of Live rock and established for at minimum a year.
This moorish is now housed in a 75 gallon tank. 225 gallons to small! Add in the fact Shawnts has (I think I read) almost 200lbs of live rock and this depletes the water volume dramatically. He has made no indication of upgrading the tank to a 300 ever. So this frightens a lot of us that he would blatantly disregard the BASIC facts known about the fish just to try and "save" a fish he special ordered that was NOT being housed in a LFS.

Kbaz, Knowledge wise I admit I am bit short on the reef side of things, still learning, but I believe you may want to use more lighting. But see what someone else says. Other than that it looks good so far.

Don't feel nervous. Ask away. Believe me, if you get picked on inappropriately, a moderator will be there to set things straight. And most people here are very helpful and will be glad to give you good advise. In this case, this hobbyist is just blatently shrugging off everything that everyone here has said about this issue, and waving a red flag so that all notice that he is bucking the system. He thrives on the attention, even negetive attention.
So, you see he is actually getting what he wants. Flames, and contraversy. He goes out of his way to create it.
Now, I think everyone here has heard enough about the morish idol "issue". Every side has been said and rehashed ad nauseam. My feeling is that the good members here are just feeding the fires here with individuals like this, making the problem worse by arguing and debating.
In any case. time to close up this topic.
