Well here is my new clam, they sold it to me as a crocea, but it doesn't look like the ones I have seen on here.

also when I took him out of the bag after acclimating him, he dropped this in the bag, I am hoping it is not his whole foot, if it is please tell me so I can take him back and get my money back.

That is not a good thing if that is his foot right?? I didn't think he could survive if his foot even got torn, I did nothing to stress him out, when I took him out of the bag, he closed up and then this shot out from underneath, I never let him be exposed to air either.

mine spit something out that looked like that too. that was three months ago, still doing well. i e-mailed the guy i bought it from, he didn't have a clue, he said, "sometimes animals just do strange things." anyway, good luck!

it looks like the "threads" they use to attach themselves--he might have been making this to attach to something --then he was stressed from the move and decided he couldn't attach and dropped it

how long have you had him -- a day??? My very first clam --I thought was healthy when I bought him--was not so healthy and past the next day--the clean up crew left me a very expensive empty shell
I hope it is what I am guessing and you wont have any problems with him

Yeah I just got him today, paid 100 bucks for the thing he was good and healthy in the store, I did research before I bought, I looked to see if the clam was gaping and what not, or what I believed I thought was gaping. HE seemed very responsive, even squirted the guy as he out him in the bag, then I got him home put the bag in the tank to let temp get right, then I dripped him for about an hour, the fish stores salinity was not that off from what I had. Then I went to pull him out he closed and out shot this thing. I thought ohh @$#$%#@ no I went and done it.

Was it attached to a rock? It looks a lot like a bunch of byssus threads, the threads clams send out to attach themselves to things. If it had been at the store a while, it may have gotten itself pretty secure where it was, and that may just be the leftovers from getting moved. Are there any visible tears at the big byssal opening at the bottom? If you can, take a picture of the bottom of the clam and post it for us.
Good luck, and it's a nice looking clam!

That looks like the foot and bysus threads to me too. I have never seen one drop it on its own. Seems like if that was its foot though it wouldn't be opening as much as it is. I hope it makes it....it looks healthy otherwise.

He wasn't attatched to anything, he was in the bottom of the tank in the sand whenI bought him. I'll try to get a pic of the bottom tonight.

I hate to be the one to tell you this but I had two separate Crocea that did this right before they died. I would bring it back if you can, but if you can't I wish you luck. I don' t think it had anything to do with my tank as the other 2 Crocea, 3 Maxima and one Deresa are all doing fine. I suspect they were bad when I got them from the LFS. They were both under VHO or Pc lighting at the store and maybe they were shocked when I put them under Metal Halides. I really don't know why they died just that they did the same thing as yours before they died.
