Well I finally got the courage and bought the tang...was a nervous wreck about it. We decided to straight acclimate her to our tank for she looked fantastic and was very hardy with excellent features that looked great. She is about 4 1/2 inches long. Here she is!! The first picture is her in her bag acclimating, the 2nd you can see she is happy..she is already picking at the substrate and rock algae..I will try and feed her tomorrow...tonight I turned on the lights for just a few minutes to grab a couple pics other than that, they are off for the evening...she is so fast that it was almost hard to get the pictures!

do you own a qt tank? if not that should have been your first buy instead of this fish. you do not want to risk getting the main tank sick if you can avoid it. i would save your money and buy a qt tank if you don't so you can put new fish in it first for 2 weeks before putting them in the main tank right away. i know even the best looking fish could still carry parasites and or diseases. hopefully you have the right size tank for this fish as well.

Hi, and thank you for the advice. Trust me I have waited quite a while to put her in my tank. She was alone in quarantine at the lfs for me but just for a week and so healthy decided to put her in my main tank because my quarantine is just 10 gallon and very tight for her. I have a 90 gallon but upgrading within the next 6 months to a year at the latest to at least a 135 or 150....she is my last fish for this tank...I have a pair of maroon clowns, a bicolor blenny, a 6 line wrasse and that is it....and that is all I am having until I upgrade. I wanted one tang now small enough to allow for growth before I had to make the move...Nasos definitely need at larger tank when they get bigger but are also one of the more hardy tangs.....

hey that's ok, no problem...probably sounded that way, I actually had a thread online about how I purchased it and it would be coming home. One good thing is I purchase the lfs water right now, the same water they use, so my parameters are always very similar and I have my water checked every tuesday and then also anytime I am going to put anything in. I also do my own test kits between...I was most nervous about putting this fish in than any other. I wanted a blue tang but was too worried about ich. Sounds like these nasos of course are susceptible to it but the blue's are much worse so I decided one day I will do a blue in my larger more established tank..for this tank is now 3 months old. Here is a pic of the tank it just went into...I am nervous about it being too small for the naso and so if I find that he has any stress in it , I will take him back immediately. I figured he would be fine for a while until my bigger purchase. I am actually hoping to buy a used setup complete so whenever one becomes available in my area is when I will jump on it and upgrade. :D

Looks very healthy and great colors. Make sure you include plenty "greens" in the diet.
I don't use a QT tank either. Feed him a well balanced diet. Looks like he is not stressed which is good. Keep your water parametrs good and constant .with plenty water movement.
You may wish to reconsider your future tank size. Smaller naso tangs grow to 18" as an adult.

yup, will be getting at least a 135 or larger ..looking now into used setups, keep watching the papers every week. Not really stressed at all, and I am almost shocked at how well she looks already. She seemed to be a little feisty at the edges of each side of the tank going up and down for a bit but then settled in rather well. I just feel that a quaranine tank can be so stressful ...even more so....as long as she appeared healthy I figured if I see her come down with something I can scoop her out of the tank...my parameters are very good, I purchased spiralua (not sure if that is right spelling), formula one, garlic vitamins and green algae sheets...I am ready!! she has been picking and picking at the substrate and rocks already....I was so nervous about her size also, the biggest fish I have now, but so far so good...

IMO..a 135 will not be big enough. Try that big auction site too. I purchased a set-up from there and saved a couple grand. Had to drive 6 hours roundtrip but worth the time given the amount saved.
I actually agree with your take on using a QT tank. I am in the minority but I feel many times they are counterproductive. The road from the ocean to the home display tank is long for these animals. To add an addtional stop can certainly add to the stress...which can lead to the animal getting sick if disease is present. ALso, many QT tanks are too small. I do not keep smaller fish so I would need a large QT tank which is not practical given space available.
I totally understand that many veterans/experts in this hobby always recommend using a QT/hospital tank and I certainly understand their position.

well congrats on your new fish. it sounds like you are doing everything well. it was a good idea to buy established water from the lfs to get your tank going. especially when getting a delicate fish such as a naso. just remember the biggest thing to keeping these guys alive is diet. the others is making sure there is a good current in the water and the water is well oxygenated, so you might want to let a powerhead blow air into the water or even a bubbler because where they usually live the water is very oxygenated and a descent current in the water. when you upgrade a 135 is the minimum i would go with these fish unless you decide to upgrade again when he gets bigger. good luck and the tank looks like it's goin well. also i see you got a cleaner shrimp, that will also help destress the naso.

HI again!! yes, the cleaner has spent some time on the naso already.....not making him crazy but a few minutes here and there which i think is great. I am not far from dickson tenn. I do know there is an aquarium maker there and if I don't find a used setup at a good price in the near future I will head up that way. I have put so much money into this tank I was trying on my next to get a used tank with all the trimmings for cheap. I sure wish i would have started with that 125 I was eyeing at first..but oh well....I have 4 powerheads in my tank....2 are 1200 maxijet that give movement..and 2 900's that break the surface for me....also have another 1200 in the center that revolves for good flow....then have the skimmer and also have a cannister filter that I tilt upward for good O2 exchange so I have tons of ripple at my tank and I keep the tank open at the top. My preference if I can't find another tang used is to hit Dickson and get on that is at least 180 gallon. I want a long tank but not too deep. My 90 gallon is JUST enough deep I can still do the cleaning well with my hubby. We do a 10% water changed every week and every other week put new fiber in the cannister filter. Every week we clean off the powerhead intakes and just check and make sure all are clean....my tank has done well so far.....I am nervous tonight with that big fish in there!! she seems to be doing great tonight but is hanging right in the spot of my female maroon clown's cave which is stressing my maroon a little bit I can tell. Although maroons are supposed to be more aggressive she is pretty mellow but I can tell she is not happy about the new "guy" but I figure it will take a few days.....

Looking good! Love your naso. I agree with a faster acclaimation. I have a QT tank, but don't use it for acclaimation, just for sick fish. I usually float the bag then wedge the bag in rocks so it can't move I then open the top and start adding my tank water, mabe afew tbs at a time every 5 mins then when its half and half I put them in the tank, takes about 30 mins, much less stress.

yes, I usually float for about 20 min for the temp to be the same and then add about 1/4 cup (this was big bag) every 10 min for 40 min and then release....I notice that my fish acclimate quickly, they are nervous once in the tank for a short period but go to explore quickly. Naso is still doing well so far, she is still checking out where she is quite a bit. Hoping she will eat a little today...

well the first 24 hours have passed and she seems quite adjusted so far. My clowns seem to have not bothered her or care but they are interested in who she is and do try to get close to her at times to check her out. She has not eaten yet but I did not expect her to yet. tonight I will try and give her a little something but not push her yet. Here are a few new pics from today during the day I have gotten. So far so good.
