My new neighbor, a hawk!

I was on my computer which is by a dormer on the 3'rd floor. I looked out at the tree by my window and there sits a hawk at least 10" tall. The bluejays weren't happy and 5 of them started flying at him. They left when he effortlessly lifted a talon and snagged one right out of the air. Thats some brutal nature to see considering I live only 5 miles from downtown. I just hope he doesn't bother the larks that live in a hole in the roof overhang. The sing like, well, larks.

Ya.. I saw a Mississippi Kite eat a Blue Jay once right outside my window... Birds really take their time when they kill something....

any relation to this guy in our yard? He has been here since he was a juvi.
Makes a BIG mess in our yard about twice a week. Feathers EVERYWHERE.
We can never tell what he has eaten. :scared:

These birds are great, very effective for pigeon and rodent control. I saw 4 Ravens attacking a low flying hawk air at a golf course once until the Hawk decided he had had enough and began whooping the crap out of the Ravens. After about 60 seconds the Hawk had ripped several large chunks of Raven meat out of them until they had had enough and left it alone. Cool birds.

I have a family of barn owls inhabit my yard every year. I love predatory birds. They are so majestic. Just think; our National symbol was almost the turkey and not the Bald Eagle. Ever see a bald eagles nest? Atleast 6-7 feet in diameter. WOW!

I agree. Every year the Kites and Red Tails nest around here. Several years we've had kites nest in a dead tree in our front yard. We've got a lot of Great Horned Owls too.
I put up an owl box many years ago, but never had any luck...

Yeah, that pic sure looks like him. I looked right at him a couple times but didn't see him until he moved his head. I'd love to see my neighbors faces when the discover what he left on the grill.
