My New Tank

Hey all, I have been out of the game for a while but just built a house with my own office so I wanted a corner reef tank.
It's a 75 gallon pentagon corner tank. It has several corals, a clownfish, mandarin goby, diamond goby, shrimp and royal gramma. I am trying tangs but can't seem to keep them alive. I'd love to hear what you all think and would also love some suggestions... Thanks!

looks nice, your probley not going to be able to keep ANY tangs in it because of its shape, how long is it?

I had no idea that tank length effected tangs. Its dimensions are 24 x 24 x 30
Also, what anemone do you suggest for the percula clown?

Actually, here is the diagram but my tank is 30 inches high as opposed to 24...

Nice!! Most tangs require a at minum 4ft long tank. Some need larger when full grown.

well geeze, no tangs... what do you suggest I get? Just clowns and gobys? Reef tanks really limit what you can get...
I'd love some suggestions...

I see... see that flower pot near the bottom of my tank? I really want to get an anemone for my clown, will I have to mive the flower pot? Is it bad if they touch?
Lastly, what time of anemone is best for a percula clown?

just to let you know that flower pots are a very hard coral to keep. I would read up on them to get as much info on them as possible. Alot of people dont like to keep them.

Nice tank... just my opinion, but I'd concentrate on getting a lot more liverock instead of more corals or anenomes. With more of a base, you'd have more places for the corals and such... be able to spread them out more.

Also, more liverock would help with filtration.
BTW, what type of lighting do you have?

Since I appear to be so limited on fish, I might as well get more rock...
As far as the lighting, I went with what http://www.tenecor.com suggested for a reef tank. Couldn't tell you what it's called but there are the blue and white lights that come on at different times. There is also a small light like a moon light that never turns off...

Just my opinion but I'd fill that tank with liverock. For a reef it is recommended to have 1-2 lbs per gallon of water. Your tank looks like it has about 15-20 lbs. The rock will help filter your water. This would also help you to keep your fish alive.
Your lighting is power compact... generally is not enough for anenomes. Take a look at peoples' reef pics here. Follow their lead.

your tank is gorgeous!
I have to tell you, though, it's not the fact that it's a reef that's limiting your choice of fish - it's the shape of the tank itself. A lot of fish need swimming areas that are long as opposed to tall.
As for a suggestion for additional livestock - I would try a dwarf angel, perhaps a lemonpeel or flame or potter's. You'll just have to keep an eye on them, as they are known to pick at corals every so often.
If it were up to me, I'd upgrade the lights like crazy and make corals and clams the centerpieces of the reef and just keep various small fish to accent.
OR....you could trade the corals in for credit and go fowlr - have an angel or a butterfly and perhaps a lionfish.
...come to think of it, a fuzzy dwarf lionfish might go nicely in your current tank. A LOT of folks on this site have them in reefs - for one, find some posts by Murph, he's got the cutest Fuzzy dwarf ON THE PLANET, and he resides in a huge 100gallon reef.

Whichever way you go, do keep us posted, we'd love to see where you take your tank!! :jumping:

You have a mandarin? Yikes, then you deffinetly need more rock and i would suggest a refuguim to breed pods because that is the only thing mandarins eat usually. You do have a beautiful tank though
. You could get a firefish, very pretty.

oh wow - I didn't catch that you had a mandarin - you will need LOADS more live rock. Even if you CAN get your mandarin to eat frozen or even live foods that you provide, it will still need a significant population of pods to survive - and the only thing that can provide that is a mature tank with many many pounds of live rock and sand. I suggest reading up on those guys - gorgeous, indeed, but infamous for slowly starving to death in home aquaria. They have a highly specialized diet, and often hobbyists just can't keep their pod populations up to snuff.
I wish you luck with him, tho - try getting him to eat enriched brine. Some people have success with supplementing the mandarin's pod requirement that way.
