MY Nightmare/Miracle......

This is for everyone who has ever battled a green algae bloom in a marine/fresh water tank...No I am not a rep from the company that has this miracle product just someone who almost quit the entire hobby after upgrading from a 30g to a 65g ...In just 2 months my tank went from ok to nightmare.....I had the 65g going for about 8 months when i went on vacation to come home to a swamp of a tank, i am talking green green green....I tried everything, medias (phos, carbon, etc...) clarifiers, water changes (big-small) and even got a bigger skimmer ....all for nothing...Didnt even make a dent in the greeness of my tank...the lucky thing was my fish and corals hung in, but my inverts paid the price....
I looked everywhere for help, posted on numerous sites, even had people try and come to my house and help, no one understood the problem, or how to fix it...i even swapped out my sand bed for a lessen depth (3"-1") for the fear that it might have been a hydrogen sulfide problem....but not even that worked...i was at my last nerve when i came across ALGONE's website and believe me it looked like a gimmick right out of as seen on TV LoL ...but i said what do i have to loose...i bought it and its a great deal/price ...I KID YOU NOT...within 3 weeks my tank was 100% clear, i couldnt believe it ...around 2 weeks every morning i could see new things in my tank is was nothing short of a miracle ...now i know different setups experience different things which require different solutions but this stuff worked for me and i figured i share.....I dont know the reasoning behind the green algae bloom except that it comes from inbalanced water, overfeedings and too much lighting, or some even say tank new a window...but this stuff worked 2 packets every 5 days for 3 weeks and BAM...Here are some pics for you to see....Comments welcome.....

Its suppose to be an organic material inbedded in these small tea-bags that you place in any filter of your tank where it can be fully submerged and in a path of water flow....I placed one in a vegiclip in the middle of my tank where the water flows directly towards it and i placed another one in my sump..(it says 1 packet is good for 55g) but with my problem as you see was nuts so i did 2....Its suppose to balance out the water column in your tank, and 0 out your nititres/nitrates....

WOW
Is that a miracle or what!! Way to go. Do you know if this product can eliminate the brown algae in my tank? I always get like a film of brown algae on the LR and on the LS. I can't take anylonger.

Actually i dont know i am experimenting with that now since i am also having that problem bc i went back to my old light setup after the tank cleared to help grow the corals ....and now i am getting areas of brown diatoms on the sand, last night i bought 2 -2 spot gobys which are fantastic for sifting the sand so will see what happens and will keep you posted, but i have to order more algone so i cant say if it will help yet....also try a sand sifter star they are good too...

Thanks, all softies for now (mushrooms, leathers, zoos, sunpolyps etc..)bc i havent switch yet to MH, and not sure if i want to....
I had a Sand sifter star once in my 30g he was great never really saw it but it cleaned in conjunction with my gobies the sand like new...i havent found one small enough to my likin yet, but i also heard they need a sufficent sand bed....
I am not saying algone will work for everyone but it did work for me and i will be ordering more real soon...

I'm still interested in the mechanism which makes it clear green water but if you are now getting diatoms... aren't you just switching one algae for another??
I'm not knocking your success at all but IMO the real problem is in nutrient control.

Ive always had a brown diatom problem even in my non maintained 30g that i never touched and had extreme success with (sometimes i wondered why i upgraded) ...but that eventually went away, as far as this tank i dunno why its coming and going but i believe its my lighting i have heard PC's are worse when it comes to brown diatoms than MH, but i dont really know...Is there really any way to attack brown diatoms on the sand? and i think a green algae bloom is a totally different scenario than brown diatoms i think ... but the diatoms usually show up darker at the end of the lighting cyle than say when the lights first come on which barely show any diatoms....
but any suggestions would help....

Looks pretty cool to me, but what were your water parameters during the algae bloom, and what were your water parameters after clearing it up with this product?

My alk, ph and phos were all fluctuating from low to high , high to low....now they are all in perfect range...and a good sign that something wasnt right was inverts were just dying...but maybe also bc since i got a bigger skimmer i run it 24/7 and never did that before.....and i can have inverts again

Wow I am interested in the removal of nitrates. Is it safe for all corals?
Crox and others with diatoms are you using Oceanic salt? I switched to Tropic Marin and never had that problem again, Carrie

Gtiguy, wow that is quite a transition, completly changed ,not sure about the product you are using, but you should try and get to the root of the problem,so it does not persist, hence you could discontinue the use, dont get me wrong,i am not knocking the product, but i know if you find the root of the problem you can run a problem free tank with no algae, anyway good luck

Thanks everyone,
Yea a UV sterlizer would have been a good investment but dunno if they really work on marine tanks with green algae remember this is not a common problem and no one really knows the root cause! I have a koi pond in my backyard which after the winter we attach a huge uv on it to clear it up and it clears the pond in a week or less, i tried attaching it to my 65g omg what a leak, it wasnt meant to be...but def a good product none the less just expensive which me being a student i didnt want to spend...Algone was $30 or so shipped containing 18 packets (1 packet a week which is good for 55g) or they have packets good for anything over 75g or so..you just have to specify...and yes my nitrates/nitrites are 0 now unbelieveable since i have never seen them this low, my friend also used solely in his sump and it cleared his sump up in a matter of weeks....you can go to their website, they have a ton of useful info for us on there....
and sweet its completely reef safe! ...just check out my corals in the pics now ...
