Ok I know this is going yo make some people mad but this is what I think. I know that swf.com is a buisness but come on I've seen people asking ?'s and they get no answers because people are to chicken s**t that they will get in trouble by a mod or something. This should be a place to learn and say whatever you want. Maybe if this place wasen't sold out of everything people wouldn't have to go other places to get corals and such. Don't get me wrong I like coming here to learn and share things with people here. But at the same time I feel you should be able to refer people to different web sites that could help them in a better way. Also I can understand locking threads if people are flaming eachother but just because someone dosen't like what they read about something then they should just stay away from that thread not lock it out. I'm sure this will be locked but I just had to speak my mind.

OH - sorry, thats not what you meant. I don't know, I've found that theres not a lot of censorship here, other sites are mentioned, websites given, I don't remember things disappearing. Did something specific happen?

There are only a few reasons I would lock a thread....and this is approaching one of them. The primary purpose of this board is question and answer about reef systems. I am sure that if attempts were made you could find numerous boards set up for expression of personal opinions!
This board is associated with a business and it is provided free of charge by the owners of that business....they have few rules but those rules are enforced when needed.
I'm not aware of recent locks and/or deletions....if you have a specific problem I'd gladly check into it...not a problem. But rants for the sake of rants are not needed....I frequent a few other reef related boards where flame suits are issued with memberships and this board will not be like that.....sorry but thats my personal position....like I said if you have a specific situation then mention it and I'll see what info I can find....if not well sorry but this forum is not for the venting of personal opinions unless directly related to developement/maintenance of reef systems!

Well since where saying whats on our minds, I'll give my two cents. i agree with Big Pappa you should be able to ask a question and get an answer of some kind i know i've asked about 10 questions and i'm lucky if I get 1 person to respond they may sound like stupid questions but we want to learn some of us are new to this hobby but still enjoy it. anyway this is a cool site and i'll still be here asking stupid questions <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

Nm reef: I think Big Pappa Pump was reffeering to my post on good online coral sellers. SWF.com is agreat place don't get me wrong but I said in my post was that swf.com is sold out of all the corals so just wanted another place. It was then locked today. But what really pisses me off is that no shark left a post saying why he or she closed it. All the other ones I see an explation of why but on mine none jsut locked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think anyone should be scared to post anything, I didn't mention any specific places with respect to this site, they are a business and it would be unfair to SWF for someone, especially a shark, to send business somewhere else. On the other hand if you cant find a product here, then I don't see the harm. Post what you want, but keep in mind if its not acceptable chances are it will be deleted or locked, and if this does happen hopefully the mod that is responsible posts or emails the poster as to why action was taken. Remember the #1 reason this board is here is to provide us reefers a place to chat, so follow the rules and all is well

In my opinion, moderators of this board actually lock out or delete very few threads in relation to the total number of threads posted.
This bulletin board is usually a pretty friendly place, where most of the members follow the basic rules of online etiquette.
Once in a while tempers may flare up somewhat, or a difference of opinion may "blind" each of us a little. It may become necessary for a moderator to step in do what he or she thinks is in the best interest of the other members viewing this site, and in the best interest of the people that allow us all to meet here in the first place.
Obvious flaming and inappropriate language are usually the two most common reasons a topic gets a moderator's attention, and if necessary will most likely either be deleted or closed/locked
Asking other members for information on where to purchase items online, that this site may or may not offer for sale, is an area that I personally feel as a moderator is a fine line to walk.
It's a judgement call, and sometimes people make good decisions and sometimes they don't.
Information relative to the hobby is a wonderful thing to share.
Information on where to purchase items for this hobby is as simple as checking out this site's product offerings, or using a search engine.
It's your choice.
One other area that moderators get involved in occassionally is acutally "moderating" the exchange of comments between two or more individuals. They act as the go between to try and resolve disputes, or at least try to keep the discussions civil, hopefuly allowing each member his or her opportunity to voice their opinion.
In this case I find it hard to act as a go between in the comments made by Big Papa Pump and Zack.
I hope you know what I'm talking about.
A new member who just registers to complain about something on this board, posts only one topic to vent frustration, and then fades away ..... is another thing that will certainly get a mods attention.

Just a couple additional comments....
If I find it necessary to lock or delete a post I mention a reason and go about my way.....blantant referal to competations sites is a reason as would be obvious flames of this site or a member here.Sources and discussion of them is in my opinion acceptable.....but obvious attempts to direct members away from this board to another is not....and at times that can be a fine line.... <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />
Second I'd like to mention that whenever I see a hint of a flame I normally do a quick search of the member making the post to see if there is a pattern or possibly a reason in recent threads....in this case a search of BigPoppaPump came up empty.....HMMMMMMMMM....member number 7200.....and his only recorded thread was a negative comment about our site and our host!!!!!

I would really like to see sites posted that have similar items. I have tried to stock my tank with mostly aqua-cultured coral, inverts, and fish. SWF.com doesn't carry any coral, inverts, or rock that is cultured or tank raised. If I was to come across other companies that sell this is it acceptable to place links here to those sites?
Or how about places that sell coral that isn't sold here? SWF.com doesn't sell any SPS coral, is is acceptable to redirect someone to locations that sell these?
There have been many times that I have looked for info using Yahoo, that I have found little info, then later have some links posted here to exactly what I want.
I'm trying to nail down what types of links are acceptable. I too find this site very valuble, and I want to see them succeed, but they clearly don't have everything that a hobbiest needs or wants for their sw tanks.

by the way Anthem I am not the phantom "Poppa" as I believe in taking credit for all I post/say...
I really don't think that SWF.com really has to worry that much about the competition as they offer superior service and ship ultra-high quality live-stock (at least in my experience).

I think there have been some good points brought up in this thread and I will add mine. I don't know if you guys saw my post titled why are there no pics posted a few days ago. But in it I asked why when I go to look at pics of certian types of corals or fish the pic window come up with no image available. I asked a simple question and got no answer or response from anybody. Sometimes I just feel like people don't care about a topic. Case in point pics. I agree with pappa in that if swf.com wasen't sold out of stuff then people would buy stuff from here but you can't buy from here when it's sold out. When I was trying to decide if I was going to go with a dsb I had a ton of questions and most of the time I didn't get the responses I was hoping for because people thought I was trying to start a flame. I do have to say though I did get some good responses after I explained my situation. I used to get mad at the speed of the new server but lately if it's going slow or not at all I just go else where or try later. I really hope somebody with some power see this to maybe try to fix some of the problems or at least explain all the policies clearly so we knoe what we can and can't post or say. I also want to add that I love coming here and can't thank you people enough for all the help I have recieved. I couldn't have done it without you help. DJ

Competition is a healthy thing, American ecconomy is based on it. If SWF does not offer a product, alternate sites should be allowed in posts. I frequent 3 BB's everyday. I am not a computer wiz and was able to find them all on my own. If SWF thinks they have the undivided attention of the folks who visit here they are disillusioned. IMO if I find a link on this board to another e-tailer I go there, see what I want to see and return here, back to the thread I got there from. Restricting links in posts is crazy. Makes for hate and discontent. People who frequent here have inquiring minds..if they don't find the answers here they will inquire elsewhere.

ok I think this thread is going down hill know there is no need for name calling and flaming me for things that I think. I never said I didn't like this site I was simply stating a couple facts that were bugging me. I have been keeping up on the posts on this thread and I've seen a couple good points and I see that I'm not the only one that thinks things could use some improvement. Yes I created this account to say whats on my mind because I thought if I used my real account I would get booted off or people would not give me help anymore. This does not mean I'm a coward or whatever some of you think it's pretty smart if you think about it. All I was saying was if swf.com dosen't have in stock or carry a certian item someone is looking for then people should be able to direct them in the right way. And I said threads shouldn't be locked because someone dosen't like the topic. I propose a toast to SWF, and to all the friendly, helpful people on this site. Many of you have gotten me out of several jams, and I know I would not know nearly as much about this hobby if it weren't for this site (among others).
I also propose a toast to those individuals who complain about stuff from time to time. While some of you see it as "flaming", I don't see anything wrong with the occasional rant - it's healthy every now and then - not to mention, it keeps this site even more interesting.
Complaining without discussion is fruitless, but complaining with discussion can lead (long term) to a better set of rules, and an improved online community.
I guess I look at it like this: if no one in history ever complained about being cold, we probably wouldn't have fire!
