My tank is 29 gallons and has been running since last summer. I have 130watt PC lighting.
Luckily, I've had very few problems with my tank. My coralline algae grows like crazy! I have to keep scraping it from the front of the tank, or else I wouldn't be able to see in.
I test the calcium and alkilinity levels, and since they are both always above normal, I've never dosed anything in the tank. I do a water change about once a month (sometimes less), and the calcium levels still stay the same.
I've also got crushed coral (half crushed coral, half argonite sand), which personally, I like. It hasn't turned out to be a problem for me at all, and I like having all the small shells and things laying on the bottom. I believe with the half sand it works like a sandbed, because whenever I move some of the substrate, I have pods, brittle stars, and all sorts of things scurrying around.

- feixjai,
Here's an explanation of the tubes:
1: Skimmer input
2: Mechanical filtration input
3: Mechanical filtration output
4: Mechanical filtration output
5: Skimmer output
Most of the things on my tank are DIY. I like to build things and constantly tweak them; I also like to see if I can build something better.
The mechanical filtration came with the tank (Eclipse), but I did a lot of modifications to work for my tank; on the output ends, I reduced to the outlet area so that my pressure coming out would decrease, and the filter would make less noise.

Actually, for a 29gallon reef, that's about the right amount of fish to have; I don't want to mess up my bio cycle.
I am, however, planning on possibly getting a dwarf angel to add to the tank.

My puffer has never touched any of the corals or any of my inverts. It's a very peaceful fish, and is the only fish in my tank that hasn't killed another fish. (My LMB killed a goby I got, and my clowns killed two firefish).
I'm not sure if all valentini puffers are docile, or if I just got lucky. :D

Thought I would add a few more pics from yesterday.
Here's my puffer searching for some food on the rocks:

My LMB hanging out as usual:
(He seems to be getting rather plump; maybe he needs to go on a diet. :hilarious )

My tank has been set up for about 8 or 9 months.
The lighting is not what came with the Eclipse hood. I bought 2x65 watt PC Retrofit kit, and built a hood for it. I used The old Eclipse black hood with filtration, but just replaced the light cover with my new hood.

Beautiful tank! I love everything you have in there, and I think your ideology about doing all of your filtration and stuff yourself is awesome!

It's a blue-spotted Long-nose puffer; also called a Blue Dot Toby, or Blue Dot Puffer.
Scientific name: Canthigaster epilamprus
