Thanks everyone!! I live in CA, West Sacramento. Its NEVER going to freeze solid and it wouldn't even freeze a milimeter on the pond, so your rong. It hardly even gets 45 where i live and + the ground is warmer than air so the pond is going to stay warmer that the air in winter and in the summer its going to stay nice and cool. He is very healthy.

Are you going to make a pond for him when he gets bigger?

I actually don't have him. I was on a "Save The Turtles Campaign" (long story) last spring when we were looking for property in the Ozarks. This guy was crossing the road and I stopped to move him into the woods when his vivid color and personality amazed me. I ran back to the car, took this picture, then released him into the woods. He (guessing it's a male by his bright colors) is a Three Toed Box Turtle. I've had people ask me to find them one and bring them back to Texas, but I refused because they require a great deal of care, and us novices would not know how to take care of one. Plus the fact they are not suited to the climate here in N. Central Texas. Geeez, and this was the short version......

i put 3 hatchlings in my pond over the 3 years i lived there. and all three found a way out and ran away. make sure ur turtle can't crawl out. or if it can crawl out, make sure there's something around the pond that it can't climb over

It had actually ran away once but thats when i didn't have the pond for it. Once day i thought id just put him on the grass on the sun and so i did. Then i got distracted and forgot about him. When i remebered about the turtle i ran back there and i didn't see it. I looked and looked all over then back yard and still didn't find it. Then my friend comes over and says he found my turtle but i just thought it was a joke. Then the next day i come over to his house and he said that again and then he showed me and so he gave me the turtle and took him back home. I was really happy he found it. He found it on the street when he was walking and he took it home. I didn't have him for 1 week. My friend had him for that long. My friend lives about 3-4 houses away from me. Then when i built the pond and when i didn't have that net on the turtle pond he got out of the pond and was on the law, he did that 2 times but each time the turtle tried to run away my dog would find him and start barking and roll the turtle around, so i ran out side to see my dog barking and trying to bite it. But when my dog bites it nothing happens to the turtle because hes built like a tank! Now i checked every little hole and put some rocks around the sliding door net thing i made so my dog or my turtle wont slide out of it. Now he will never get out.

Nice pond, I would like to have one in my backyard, but I think I would end up with boiled fish/turtles in the summer.

BTW, your dog is very cute!
