I know when doing a water change I should suck out some uneaten food and detrius. But all the detrius is on the sand. Everytime I suck it up i suck up sand too. Is there a better way? or will i continue to just eat away the sand bed and have to add to it?

Get a Python Clean & Fill; it has a vacuum tube that cleans the substrate without removing it. They're available about anywhere, even Wal-Mart.

While you can suck up some of the sand a few times without messing much up, I would definately focus on why you have food on your sandbed. Either purchase more cleanup crew, feed less, or other methods of lessening the debris at the bottom.
While sucking it out will help, i see this as a temporary solution, and the best solution would be to reduce the food particles building up at the bottom OR put something into the system that eats up the food (IE cleanup crews or fish).
