My Yellow Tang is turning Pink!

Help - My yellow tang is in quarantine - it has slowly been developing pink areas like stripes on its fins. It is so weird. There is a pink fake plant in the quarantine tank but I don't think it faded onto the fish!! Anyone had this happen? It's almost time to put it back in the DT so I wanted to ask before we do that...

head and latteral line erosion if I am thinking clearly. Reddish/pink sometimes is a sign of a bacterial infection. Check out the disease thread or contact Beth. DO NOT PUT IN MAINTANK until you figure this out. What foods are you offering? I suggest algea sheets soaked with garlic and also Zoecon. NO BRINE HTH, Barry

rub your finger on the fake pink plant and see if it rubs off. try this in and out of water. I don;t know what else to tell you.

I would have to agree with Barry on this!! HLLE would be lost of color and it makes the fish look BAD instead of red stripes... :happyfish

Oh dear - what do I do for a bacterial infection? I don't think she can handle the 10gallon hospital tank anymore...sounds like the tank size will kill her if the infection or whatever doesn't. Is it contagious if I put her in the main tank?

if it is a bacterial infection it would most likely be contagious! I would pull that fake plant out, do a water change on your qt tank and give it a few days to see if it clears up! This is just in case the dye from the plant is leeching into your water and possibly affecting your tang! As a rule, there should be nothing in a qt tank.

SO BAD!! This is actually crazy but we went ahead and took it out of the quarantine tank ( it was so crammed in there) - acclimated it and put it in the DT tank last night which has PERFECT water perameters. It's a reef tank so there is only 1 other fish that could be hurt by anything contagious,....this morning all the pink is gone and she is swimming everywhere and eating well and having a great time. I guess she is cured! I thought it may have been a bacterial disease but she is fine now!

That is a sign of bacterial infection. What are your water readings? How long has the fish been in QT?

Hi Beth - the fish has been in quarantine in hypo for about 4 weeks. We have just had it in a higher salt (1.023) for the last few days. We did have a slightly higher nitrate for a couple days in hypo. Now we have her in the regular display tank and she is fine. Calcium is 400, SG 1.023, ammonia 0. 0 nitrates and nitrites. PH 8.2
The rest of the stuff my husband knows. Why would she recover so fast? I started feeding her garlic, vitamins 3 days ago. Anyway, hope she stays well!
