Please help my identify this fish. My LFS said it was a Clown Tang. But I don't think they know what they are talking about.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

How big is it. Like am3 said....
I dont know if Clown tangs start out Blue when really young but I think I see the orange lines starting to show thru on the fish like a Clown tang has. The pic is not great but if it is starting to develope the orange horizonal lines then could be a juvi Clown.

Yes, my wife and daughter picked it out. Apparently the guy at the LFS, who hasn't steered us much wrong in the past, advised that he would do alright in our tank and wouldn't be all that difficult to care for.
I see by some research that I have done that this doesn't appear to be true. I am thinking about taking it back. This is his fifth day in the tank and he appears to be alright. But this site states expert only and I will freely admit I am far from an expert. I was thinking about getting a sailfin tang. Appears to be a much better choice.

I reckon if you are going to try one, a juvenile would be the best way to go other than trying an adult. That at least is a positive.
How big is your tank, age, inhabitants?

how big is it...it cant be a clown because thats the shape of a kole tang...it could be an adult chevron if it has a little bit of orange still there...it looks black in the pic on my laptop so thats what i think but can be wrong...

I have attached another picture that I took today, it's a lot clearer, hope it helps.
I currently have a Maroon Clown, and a Coral Beauty Angel, along with the normal cleaner crew. I have a 70g tank, wet/dry sump and protein skimmer. Approx. 20 lbs of l/r. I am trying to accumulate l/r a little at a time to aviod the big hit. All #'s look good on the tank.
Oh, and all the white spots is not something scary, my maroon clown just dug a hole in the dsb again just as he was swimming through. I have seen a couple of other posts that state maroon clowns are notorious for this.

If it's Ich, I must have a miracle worker for a cleaner shrimp as it was all gone within 5 minutes.

I have been seeing these tangs much more often lately (at least two or three times this month) and I can tell you that it is not a clown tang. We have been getting these and juvi clowns in at the same time at the same size and they look nothing like each other. As noted earlier, this has the body of a kole tang. My store has them coming in as "Striatus Tangs", and I have found them under the latine name of Ctenochaetus striatus. I am not definitely sure about this, but I have not found any other tang that they appear to be. As adults these guys look completely different, so if you go searching for this tang under the latin name, try and find a juvenile picture of one.
