Sounds like a routine inspection by the tang police! (I've heard they've started randomly sacking houses looking for tang abuse *wiggles eyebrows*) They kicked over your trash can as a warning 
Seriously, I know how you feel part of my aquarium display room (aka my living room with 400gal(s) of sw tanks) smells like that from a horrible rendezvous with an over-anxious RO system. You'd think it would go away after a while. (Well, I keep hoping. Otherwise that carpet is getting yanked.)

That's one of the strangest things I've heard lately.
Maybe you DO have a poltergeist that is from the " You don't need to do water changes" school of thought ....
Maybe you can get this ghost to clean algae off the front glass, or at least run a nitrate test for you now and then.
Was this 30 gallon trashcan of saltwater turned all the way over upside down ???
