Hello,
The name is Carlos, all my life I've dealt with nothing but fresh water aquariums. It wasn't until my younger niece of 5yrs old was watching Finding Nemo asked that she wanted that certain type of fish. Of course me being the good uncle
I wanted to surprise her with a tank when she comes to visit for the summer.
I don't want to just jump off and start asking a million ?'s. I was just wondering if there is maybe one or 2 specific books I can read or anyone can recommend, reguarding their natual habitat/filtration/anemonies/food/lighting and what other species of fish I can place them with.
It's going to be between a 35-55 Gallon aquarium. I've been lurking the message boards just trying get ideas, I finally decided to join.

Asking a million of questions is certainly okay. That is what we are here for. However, on top of that, The Conscientious Marine Aquarist by Robert Fenner is an awesome book to check out.

I'm trying to be a bit careful around the forums. I know sometimes usually I've had problem on car forums just asking ?'s. People would be annoyed about not doing their re-search. I figured I should read the basics and if I'm not too sure on things ask ?'s
Thanks for the warm welcome.

welcome to the hobby.
there is a search function for the boards, but ask away. i answer anything i can and sometimes the same question will bring new research into the board. no question is stupid when it comes to life.

What about the questions that are just insanely stupid?
Like "my 4 year old got into my tank of blue rings, is that bad?"
Obviously that is a terrible situation, but if it was an honest question, everybody would just shake their heads :scared:

Thanks everyone, I have 2 aquariums in the attic. I'll snap pics of those and hopefully you can help me with the set up.

IN THE ATTIC!! They dont belong there. They belong downstairs right in the living and family room. Filled with fish and coral.

I was looking around the forum, and seen bigger tanks with the filtration system under the cabinets. Are they needed for smaller tanks?
What alternatives can I use?

another good book is, The New Marine Aquarium. There are several good books out there, it is a great idea to read up before begining.

Welcome to the boards. Please don't be afraid to ask any question. We have all been newbies at one time. I learned early, "The only dumb question is the question that is never asked." Good luck.

Thanks again everyone. I actually went out to a pet store today that dealt with salt/freshwater fish. They really weren't too helpful with things. I asked about lighting, what would be great for my tank they just pointed me into a section with out explaining why.
After looking at their tanks, I was trying to figure out how in the hell did these fish survive in such filth :(
---Sold a few parts off my honda because I decided just to buy a new tank and stand

Will that be enough flow for the thank or would a powerhead be needed?
Also depending on the tank I decide to get in the end, what protein skimmer should I go with overall?
Tank is going to be no larger than 40G for sure.
