Name that Marine animal...HELP!

Ok, I just got back from my local fish store (I refuse to abbreviate local fish store as it took me a long time to figure out what the hell people were talking about and typing it out takes the same 1/2 second that it takes to shift or caps lock the letters anyway, I think people are just trying to make themselves sound experienced). Anyway, I digress...
I asked the local shop keep if what I had growing on my live rock would eventually become a large feather duster or sea fan or something cool. First he got this terribly sad look on his face as though he were the police coming to tell me someone had died, then he shrugged his shoulders and said, "that’s not a fan". When he saw the distress on my face he asked some more questions and I described to him the white, round, hollow tubes that have been growing out of my rocks. He continued to explain that it could be anything but if he didn't recognize it, then more than likely it was bad. I pleaded, "There are fan like creatures that come out of the tubes and retract quickly whenever a fish swims by". He continued to shake his head and said, "It doesn’t sound like it's anything that’s good for your tank".
I've provided a couple pictures and what I'm hoping is that someone can identify them and tell me why they are bad or good.
My first thought was that this was some sort of disgruntled fish store guy who much like a comic book nerd had grown tired of entertaining naive or repetitive questions from newbies. I don't think that was the case however, because I'm usually pretty good at detecting smoke when It's being blown up my ass and this guy was actually trying to help me come up with a solution while at the same time not trying to sell me anything.
So you see my dilemma, please help if you can.
Thanks,
KL8N

Sure hope they are not bad as we have 100's of em all over our rock. I always assumed just another type of filter feeding worm.

Is it white tubes, with white feathers that come out. I have them too.

I am happy to announce a feather duster. I have 5 of the white ones, so many I can't count of the tiny red ones, and a few white with black.
I know fish stores can be so upsetting.

Holy C'moly!! You need to get another LOCAL FISH STORE (yup, it definately takes longer). Either that guy was just fillin' in for someone else, or he didn't really work there. Maybe the dead store clerk was right behind the counter the whole time!!! Anyway, yes, that is a feather duster. They are not bad to have in your tank. You should always check here first.:)
There is always somebody who will know...I think?? And besides...We love pics!!!!!!!

 some pet stores are just a--holes, and really could careless if they are of help, believe me I have had my share of them. I love the time when we bought a refugium. We had no idea how to set it up, so as we are walking out the door I turned to say thanks to the guy, and they were caught red handed making fun of us for being dumb. I have never told my husband, that would dangerous, believe me, he would have shown them what dumb really was.

Wow!! Who isn't dumb when it comes to this hobby?? I guess as soon as you think you got a grip on it, THEN you will be deemed "dumb". Cause there is so much info that you can't possibly expect to think that you know even a fraction of it!! Boy, I'd like to have a word with the idiots at YOUR LFS!!!!!

Too funny... now that I think about it, it was kinda odd the way he kept standing between me and any sort of view behind the cash register......and why was he carrying a bloody chain saw? Interesting theory.
So the consensus is feather duster then? Beneficial?
