Ok, I just got back from my local fish store (I refuse to abbreviate local fish store as it took me a long time to figure out what the hell people were talking about and typing it out takes the same 1/2 second that it takes to shift or caps lock the letters anyway, I think people are just trying to make themselves sound experienced). Anyway, I digress...
I asked the local shop keep if what I had growing on my live rock would eventually become a large feather duster or sea fan or something cool. First he got this terribly sad look on his face as though he were the police coming to tell me someone had died, then he shrugged his shoulders and said, "that’s not a fan". When he saw the distress on my face he asked some more questions and I described to him the white, round, hollow tubes that have been growing out of my rocks. He continued to explain that it could be anything but if he didn't recognize it, then more than likely it was bad. I pleaded, "There are fan like creatures that come out of the tubes and retract quickly whenever a fish swims by". He continued to shake his head and said, "It doesn’t sound like it's anything that’s good for your tank".
I've provided a couple pictures and what I'm hoping is that someone can identify them and tell me why they are bad or good.
My first thought was that this was some sort of disgruntled fish store guy who much like a comic book nerd had grown tired of entertaining naive or repetitive questions from newbies. I don't think that was the case however, because I'm usually pretty good at detecting smoke when It's being blown up my ass and this guy was actually trying to help me come up with a solution while at the same time not trying to sell me anything.
So you see my dilemma, please help if you can.
Thanks,
