Nano Cube owners, how often do you clean sponges/bioballs?

You know what I mean, right? Those black sponges in the left and middle chambers of the back of your tanks...
I'm not talking about throwing them in the dishwasher or something, but I removed the sponges on the back left of my 24G JBJ nano cube during a water change, and squeezed them out, while swishing them around and the water in my bucket was quickly cloudy with detritus and who knows what else.
Is this a common practice? Something that is not necessary?

I squeeze out the sponge (I only have one in there) weekly, and replace it monthly.
The balls... They never made it into my tank, but you should probably rinse them off at least quarterly, to make sure you get enough flow through the chamber.
