its better to start out with a larger tank, at least 55 gal. its easier to maintain the water levels

Depends on what you are going to keep in your tank. I have a 60 gal FOWLR and do fine with just my LR and a cannister. I only have a five fish and 4 are pretty small.
So, no, I don't think they are necessary. That being said, I think they are convienent and nice to have. Easier to make changes/adjustments and hide equipment in a sump.

I dont know if I agree with that statement. My first fish tank was a 12 gallon. The key I found is not the size but know what you are doing. Read posts alot and do not do anything quick. it takes time and add stuff slow.

Welcome to the Board.
I see you are from FT Worth. If you are looking for a good Local Fish Store check out Randy's Fish Warehouse by the NE Mall.
Nano tanks have the benefit of being cheaper than regular tanks.
Having said that... Nano Tanks allow VERY little room for error. For instance.. the power went off for almost 9 hours at my church where my 210 gallon is located. Everything survived. With a nano that would have been much more risky. Water chemistry changes quickly, salinity can change quickly, etc. Quick changes can mean death.

sounds good to me. thats a good size to start out with, and you can always add a sump/fuge if you want later on
