It would have to be one that could cripple the country economically - Telecomm, Oil and Gas, etc. A big giant plane company won't cut it.
Boeing has some major clout. It is one of only 2 companies in the world that build big airplanes.

Wont happen....would hurt their stock value initially and affect profits.
See, I disagree, I think it would drive some business to them, if they market to the general public. (see ford not taking the stimulus package)
But a company like Boeing, the way they sell planes and stuff, I don't think it would kill them. The fed's aren't going to go ask airbus to build their planes after all.

What it will take is for the people to get their bullies full and throw the union out. The company really cant do it.
That wont happen........that would be like a welfare recipient voting for welfare reform.....

They almost did, this got reviewed and changed, but they almost DID ask airbus instead of Boeing...

Here is where, 3 years later, Boeing finally got the contract after Boeing spent $MM in court.

Sure it would drive some business....but I am sure those with the pocket books at stake wouldn't like the added cost or attention.
Most americans truly don't care......
Boeing couldn't do it...as the average consumer that would support this, probably isn't going to be able to assist in boosting their sales.
Airbus did almost get the contract...and remember...the gov could always go to lockhead martin.....there are plenty of fish in the sea.

But they didn't, and that was a joint venture with Northop Grumman. Basically Northrop Grumman was bidding on it, with an agreement with airbus for the bulk of the manufacturing... (Northrop Grumman is a company that has been around since the 20's if I'm not mistaken, well separately) And when it did boil down to it, they went back and went with the more domestic company... Look Boeing's bread and butter is the 700 series aircraft. They made other stuff most noteably the minute-man ICBM's. And now they're doing lots of stuff in regards to UAV's. But Lockheed Martin really isn't a direct competitor for the large aircraft. Sure they are on the fighters, but what would really happen, Boeing makes the F-15, F-18, F-22, all the C-series aircraft, and hell airforce (whether it be the chinook or the 747) one. I don't care what kind of labor battle goes on there is no way in the world that the President of the USA would fly on an Airbus. I guess imo, if push came to shove, the military isn't going to loose a political battle to the unions, no matter who the president is...
