I live in daytona beach and have easy access to the ocean via the beach or my boat. Should I or can I use natural ocean water for water changes. Has anybody tried this or have any expierence with it? If so what precausions if any should I take? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

i would avoid natural seawater because of the pollutants it may contain. at least you CAN control what goes in to your change water :)

Any water you would be collecting wouldnt be worth using unless you were getting it miles off the beach, and knew that where you were getting it from was uncontaminated. THe beach is like the oceans filter. Anything that makes it up there is not worth using.

I live in Parkland, and the ocean isn't that far off. I wouldn't take water from the ocean... reasons stated above. Though my fish store, (Saltwater Innovations, in Boca) does. They go a couple miles out and pump it up from about 100 feet down.

Isn't it a damn shame when you have to say "natural sea water is too polluted to use, better off using your own"

sounds like alot of trouble going out to bring back water ive got a friend that has a good sized boat and we go out 50 or 60 miles to go finishing and burn alot of gas getting there and back i couldnt see going threw all that trouble just to get water when you can get pretty good stuff from filtered water and salt

I have no experience getting saltwater from the ocean for my tanks.
Also got too much time and cash wrapped up in my tanks to consider doing it.
Good idea - but not practical IMO.
How's the nightlife down on A1A these days ?
Gotta love Daytona !

i would definetely not do it. i mean if you think about it all the millions of people who swim in that water during the year and all those little kids who just decide there just going to pee in the water. can we say gross. :D

Thanks for all the advice. It was just an idea I didn't know if it would maybe be benificial but the consensus says NO....lol
A1A is hop'n right now. We just had speedweeks for the daytona 500 a few weeks ago and then last week was bike week, which is my personal favorite. Now starts a month of Spring Breaks. You should come check it out some time, just remember to leave you don't want to live here...lol :D

I live in West Palm Beach and ocean water is all I use and have been for 5 years. I agree there is a chance of the water getting contaminated, but if you go just a short distance off shore (in my area)you should be fine. The last 1/2 hour of high tide is the best. Trust me, service guys and lfs stores pull there water right from the shoreline and if they say they don't, they are telling you lies, I see them on a daily basis when it is high tide and water is clean. But rmemeber this in the West Palm area, the gulf stream is closest here and I believe that make a big difference on how clean the water is.
