I love living in front of a conservation area.
I swear this bird was a foot tall!! He was about 6 feet from my sliding glass door.

Meeting with nature is nice...what is that though, a falcon? Seems the beak is too small for a hawk, but I am not sure.

On second thought is Larry Bird dead? Sitting on top of the B-Ball hoop it could be Larry Bird reincarnated.

Tizzo I forgot you just moved to Fla. Get used to seeing them along with a lot of eagles and other tropical birds. I've had some wood storks outside my condo the last few days and I'll try to get a pic.

I got used to seeing them in the sky, but I don't think I could ever get used to having something so pretty right outside my door!
My daughter, ever so casually says, "Mom, theres a bird on the basketball hoop, wanna see it" so to appease her I got up. When I saw what it was I all but tripped over myself getting the camera out! lol

Just make sure you think twice before approaching any heron of the larger species. They aren't very nice. They'll let you get pretty close but can turn on you.

He woulda smacked the class if he headed toward me. I wouldn't approach them, but since he approached, I had to get the shot.

tizzo, Very nice picture. I love hawks and eagles.
I was taking my son to school wens, and in the road ahead I could tell there was something, got up to it, and it was a young Eagle. its head was almost all white, but had a little brown still. It flew up in front on us with some flesh it had been eating. I looked in the mirror and it landed on top of a house behind us. I hope he didnt leave his snack up there.
there is a nest somewhere close. I saw a pair last month.
we also see Kestrals now and then

i dont think the frigate is considered a bird of prey, is it??

I see your meaning. Here's a description of their feeding habits from fws.gov
Lacking the ability to take off from water, frigatebirds snatch prey from the ocean surface using their long, hooked bills. Prey primarily consist of fish and squid. Juveniles and adults often obtain food by piracy from boobies, tropicbirds, and shearwaters. Frigatebirds often supplement their diet by this type of harassment.
