I need a RED fish to finish the stocking of my 90 gal (LR/LS)..
The flame angel is too risky (nipping at polyps?)..
Someone at a LFS recommended a fairy wrasses...
Don't know anyting about these.
Any input for a final RED fish, an active friendly swimmer.... in essence: the perfect RED fish???
Thank you

the flame hawk is an awesome fish i would worry about reef friendly though, there are a few red clown fish i have a tomato that is very rooommate friendly, the wrasse is a good choice but what do you think of 4-5 fire shrimp? lots of red and good for the tank(they help in reducing ich) just something to think about....tobin :happyfish

Can you list your inhabitants, including corals? The hawk is a threat to crustaceans but otherwise really nice

Fish: 2 small clowns, 5 small blue/green chromis, one small Ytang, one small blue yellow tail damsel.
Only a very small colony of button polyps

well first tsk tsk upon u for keeping a tang in a tank less than 125 (sry, had to) second a flame hawk may work or some flame cardinals? a longfin fairy wrasse? or u can get a black tip reef shrk and paint it red
a trimma goby perhaps? a scarlet fin soldierfish?

there are a few majority red fish that would work in that setup one being a flasher wrasse. this is a male that is more orange than red but they are gorgeous fish.

Hey Mike, my flassher is getting alot more yellow then he had when i first got him, I just read somewhere that they actually turn yellow as adults, juvis are orange/red. I thought mine was just fading
because there is no female present. Very cool fish.

some species do and others get more vibrant it just depends on what species it is. I know this species gets more vibrant and deeper color on the males anyway.

So how can you tell what the --- is? And can you tell what mine is by this pic? 1st pic is now, 2nd pic is when i first got it, you can see its now more yellow.

Well if you are up to the finicky feeding (mine will only eat certain brands of frozen zooplankton or mysis soaked in fatty acids like zoacon) a male lyretail anthias is a beautiful fish (MUCH nicer looking in person than any online pic). They can get a little cranky but their disposition is better than the hawkfish or flame and it definately looks better than any hawkfish (and cheaper too). Be prepared for the possibility of some dolphin like acrobatics when you 1rst take them out the bag (fairy wrasses are just as prone to carpet diving). Its more violet than red but flames are more orange than red. In fact in many ways its simular to the fairy wrasse (long dorsal fin runner, plankton eater ect) but its not quite as docile/peaceful as a fairy wrasse. Mine is about 3" and they get to 4.5"
My concern is the yellow tang, I wouldn't attempt to add a fairy wrasse or my suggestion without taking it out and letting them settle first. the hawk could go right in. Its hard to put a relatively peaceful fish in after a yellow tang. My PB tang relentlessly chases any attempt at adding a newcomer. so he has to come out for several days when new fish come in.

I would have to say that is a male because of the protrudeing spike on the top fin most of the females do not have this.

I would say some maroon clowns. But seeing as you already have two clowns you would have to take those back if you wanted the maroons. IMO maroons are way smarter/cooler to watch. As far as the flame angel goes, why not just give it a try? They dont always nip corals, Ive been reading up on them alot and havnt heard too many complaints about them. Some, yes. Many? no.
edit: I noticed a post about getting 5 or so fire shrimp for their color. I dont suggest that unless you like looking at them with a flash light. My fire shrimp chills in the same spot all day/night in the back of my tank and never comes out. Its almost a wasted 30 bucks. I would definately rather have another skunk cleaner.
