They're not big fish but a really cool idea (I think) is to have a large school of small fish, such as a species of Damsel (maybe Yellowtail) or a large school (10 fish) of Chromis. They'll add a big color palate to the tank and they're also good cleaners...eating all the left overs, from your other fish.

It seems that the main characters of this project were so easy to pick, but the smaller (8-9") colorful group I want for the last inhabitants are really the hardest to pick.
I have been through
Porkfish
Yellow Tangs
Purple Tangs
Atlantic Blue Tangs
Butterflyfish
etc...
I don't want any other BIG fish as the Queen and Miniatus will be a handful. I just need some good hardy dither, colorful, active fish that are hardy and won't get eatten. Oh well the search for the perfect fish continues. For now I'm here:
Volitan Lionfish
Snowflake Moray
Miniatus Grouper
Harlequin Tusk
Queen Angel
Golden Moray (aka Banana/Canary Moray)
I'm sure the Purple and Yellow Tangs will play a role in the last step, just not sure how yet. I sure wish these guys could live together...

Don't you think the Lion / Miniatus would slowly but surely hunt them down?
I originally wanted exactly that a nice school of fish that would not get eatin, but gave up when I read my grouper gets 18".
I considered a school of Anthias, but assumed they would not stand a chance.
I even considered a nice school of squirellfish till I read they are highly noctornal.

Personally, I think that's maybe two fish too many. As the fish get bigger, you're gonna have a problem with territorial issues. I'm not a fan of the Foxface or Purple Tang, so those are the two that I'd get rid of, if it was my tank.
With the Damsels/Chromis, some are sure to be eaten...but they're also not expensive to replace and most of them would be too fast to become dinner. $3 is alot better than $25+ when you're replacing Damsels/Chromis and not Anthias.

And don't think the Sohal will be a nightmare? I worry about it attacking the Queen.

I know everybody hates on Sohals and say that they are basically Satan's pet fish, but I love mine like crazy.
She's about 5 inches long so she's still fairly young but she's housed with some small peaceful fish such as an Ocel Clown, Diamond Gobies, and Bar Gobies. The newest addition to my tank is a little juvy Queen Angel. She's less than a third the size of the Sohal, and the Sohal leaves it and everything else alone. My Sohal is more passive than any other tang I've ever seen or owned inlcuding Yellows, Blue Hippos, Nasos, and even Purples. I know every individual fish is differant so I'm not really sure what my point is here. I guess I'm just saying that you should give the Sohal a shot. Just make sure ya get a small one... Good luck!!!

Butterfly fish are extremely "delicate" fish. I had a Long Nose, he died just because my ac bonked out and my tank went from 78-80 and back down to 78 in a few hours and that nocked him over. I now have another one. Long noses are supposed to be the hardiest buttefly of the bunch along with the copperband but they're still delicate. I would make sure that if you do put in a butterfly fish to put it in later on down the road.
........................
I heard that the top 3 hardiest were the following.....
Hardiest:Heniochus Black and White Butterflyfish...
2nd Hardiest:Threadfin Butterflyfish
3rd Hardiest:Raccoon Butterflyfish
I have known that Copperbands are NOT very hardy...So I think you'll be fine with Raccoons....They are pretty easy to take care of :cheer: ......Not to flame at the person I copied or anything

AW2, been thinking about this and I like the idea. How many "small fish" would you add? 10, 20, more? The Damsels don't school do they? Only the Chromis right?

thats an awesome idea about the chromis , but unfortunatly with a volitan lion it would only be about 2 weeks before he would eat every single one of them..
