need about 5400 flow..how

For those of you that have larger tanks..in my case a 180. How did you get your flows up to the 30x area. The return will be 1000 roughly...so what did you use for the other 4400 or so. Squidd mentioned oceansmotions or tunze pumps. Looks like I would be spending 700 to 800 for those options. Is that what I should just plan on spending or are there other options?
If you used oceansmotions how did you run the plumbing?

If you go on the OM site you will see examples of plumbing setups. Look into a Dolphin Ampmaster Pump or Sequence Dart or hammerhead.

yea I am leaning toward the super amp master 4000 or the amp master 4700. Quietness would be the deciding factor since I could go with either the 1'5 or the 2'0 outlet to the Oceansmotion 4 way. I can't really find any good pictures of how the plumbing was actually done. Or how the unit is mounted at upper tank level. Will look again. I figure that setup will cost me about 750 bucks..plus some tubing costs. Seems like will have to put about that dollar amount into the flow huh?

wow 30x area flow rate!! wow!! why soo much??.. i thought reef tanks only need about 12x.... isnt 30x.. a little too much?? ... i believe in bigger is better but man.. seem like u gonna plaster your pets to the aquarium glass.......... he he

Some people do more flow. I push about 32X. But I'm leaning towards a stickly SPS tank where flow is very important, especially as the corals grow.
However, for those of you with a mixed reef, varied flows throughout the tank are a must and that much is really not that necessary. It is nice to have all that water power between your finger tips, but you also have to be able to calm it down in areas if needed.
I run a 4 way OM and have it split into 8 Bulkheads around my tank. Every one, has a valve to allow me to turn some down if needed. Remember with that much flow, a DSB will no longer exist. Barebottom or SSB = Better, for high flow.
I run a Sequence Hammerhead on my closed loop and I can barely hear the thing.

whoa.. man.. electic bill must be insane..... light/pumps/heater.. holy cow.. man i love reef tanksz... well actually aquariums in general.... but man i cant afford that much $$ on maintence ..... plus my old house cant handle the wattage..... (98 year old house smack middle of atlantic city)

thanks for the info spmnarciso. I want to keep a sand bed..not deep as I will have a deep one in the fuge. Wondering now if I should keep the flow down closer to 20x.

Tunze pumps range from 11W for 1600 gal/h to 62W for 5283 gal/h. that's really not much electricity at all considering the amount of water that is being moved.

Yep, that's one of the options for high flow systems..a
Ad they're more a "Plug and Play" then drilling the tank, plumbing , and making sure you have your outlets set right "the first time"...
Probably a "pair" of 6100s rather than one sided flow...

actually i figured out if i just buy the two pumps and a cheaper controller can get it down to just over 670. is the more advanced controller worth 150 bucks? The cheaper one appears to just turn them both off and on at same time. The more expensive one says it has a food timer, wave simulation, operation in night mode(what is that?), sequential pump circuit, and tide simulation. What do you all think?

Okay those that are still reading this thread. How bout this idea. Go with two tunze turbelle stream pumps (6100) on either end of the aquarium at slightly different heights, two maxi jets on the back spaced evenly from the end..and the return in the middle with a seaswirl (1")driven by a mag18. I would control the 4 power heads with a wave creator controller described below. I have two concerns. First:It says it controls 3 power heads and a main pump. Will it work with 4 powerheads.
Second what kind of connectors are on the tunze's? Can I put a standard plug on them? or do they come with one?
That would be 1150(seaswirl/return)+6350(tunze's)+600(maxi jets) for a maximum flow of 6350 which is 41x and should not have any dead spots.
Wave Creator can handle up to 4 pumps (3 powerheads and 1 main pump). There are eight user selectable Day Modes and one Automatic Night Mode for gentle current. The Night Mode comes on automatically when the Wave Creator light sensor detects darkness, and returns to Day Mode when the sensor detects day light. Wave Creator also features Feed Mode, Test Mode, and Cycle Range Adjustment. Pressing Feed Mode button once will shut off all pumps for feeding time. Press it again to manually return Wave Creator to normal operation. Otherwise, Wave Creator will automatically return to normal operation mode after 10 minutes. Test Mode will turn each pump on for 2 seconds and automatically return the Wave Creator to normal operation after 3 test cycles. Cycle Range Adjustment allows the user to select the length of time the powerheads stay on. The duration is from 30 seconds to 30 minutes.
It may be better to control the maxi jets separately and the tunzes with their matching controller but what do you think?
