need camera suggestions! Melody?! Scooba?! Anyone?!

I'm getting a new camera in the next week or two. I have heard everyone RAVE about the Canon G5, and I'm inclined to go that route...but would love some other suggestions.
I want something that acts like an SLR. Fast shutter speed, fast auto-focus, able to manually change settings and take 5.0 MP pics. A stabilization feature like my camcorder has would be nice. I want to be able to take killer pics of my fish w/o using a flash...which my camera just won't do. My problem with my current camera is: too low resolution, does not take good non-flash photos unless I use a tripod, and then many of them are still very smudgy.
Does this magical G5 have a stabilization feature? ScoobaQ has posted some awesome photos w/his G5...Melody has the G3, I think and takes some astonishing photos...can either of you answer my questions?

I hear the G5 is great. For the money right now IMO the G3 has the same features. Check out the thread a few down by Marlin asking for G3 pics. To my knowledge there is no stablization feature. I know thats common in a camcorder. I have used a tripod for my G3 and 35mm. Someone else may be able to chime in on the other features you are asking for on another camera they may have.
Its a tough decision......its like computers, the technology changes daily.

You're right...it's really hard to decide...
I'm also looking at the Dimage A1, because it does have a stabilization feature...
Decisions...decisions....

I am guessing you have looked at dpreview.com?
Lots of decisons is right. Its not like we are trying to figure out wether or not to get the buy 1 get on 1/2 price sale on shoes.
This is a big $$ decision. I think it all depends on what you will be shooting. Mine is mainly kids, vactations, life moments.....etc. So the G3 has been fantastic.

You may also want to look into some of the Nikon Cameras. I've got the 5400 but I think the 5700 and higher have SLR. Also the D70 and D100 are towards the more professional picture taker but I'm not much on photography, I've just seen a lot of beautiful pictures taken from them. Check em out...

One taken with my 5400....about 3 feet away....

Luke, that's a coooooooooool shot! I liked my Nikons, so I did check those out...too much $$ for me. No one was offering a price drop on any of them.

But if you want something similar to an SLR, why not just get a digital SLR.
You know...that was so obvious, I missed it. I did just that. Well, kind of. I figured if I was going to blow the $$, I'd get the Minolta with the image stabilization and all the other accoutrements. And I found a great price drop on it. I don't think it qualifies "technically" as an SLR, but it's got all the features I really wanted. It's probably more than I need, but I want to grow INTO a camera, not OUT OF a camera. Besides, if I don't like it, it will sell easily for the price I paid on ----:)
And to Scooba and lovethesea: those websites were loads of help...thank you!
I also checked epinions, cnet and bizrate to get "consumer reviews" on the camera, and all the sites rated it a solid value.
I think I'm satisfied w/my purchase...now I'll just stay off those sites, because I don't want to see a price drop I could have taken advantage of--or an even cooler camera to become obsessed with!
THANKS EVERYONE!

1 question
I went to a local Best Buy just to see how much the are selling for in stores, because I plan to purchase my digi over the net.
And I saw that the REBEL did not have much zoom.
Is that true, or did I see the wrong camera.
It was priced just short off 1000 dollars.
and they sold an Autofocus extra lense that was 10x zoom for a bit more then 300 dollars.
Now what I am thinking, If I go with the Digital Rebel, I will not buy the extra lense for the ZOOM, I'd rather go with another camera that comes with 10x for when I need to take far away shots or zoom in.
It makes sense to me, I know that there is a quality difference, but I'd rather have 2 cameras if I am going to be paying 300 dollars for just a zoom, for instance I'll get the G3 as an extra camera, wait does that have 10x....
well you get my point.
That way I will carry around the cheaper one, rather then risking a 1000 camera in my car...
nice info thanks.

I agree with Scooba. (don't tell his wife
)
I already have a 35 mm and I will never let go of it. Have had one in my hand since about 10. I went kicking and screaming
into digital and now love it. BUT still need my 35mm.
Maybe one day will go down the digital SLR path, but for now I am happy.
Just save the extra bucks thats needed and get what you really want.

I will look into it, thanks alot.
I have developed over 3000 pictures from a 35mm.
Digital would not only be more convinient, but also cheaper and more accurate.
I have used a digital at times, a very cheap on I might say, and I did miricles with it.
Im guessing alot of times its only technology that is good, but the better half of it comes with your skills and practice.
I just don't see the big difference.
I mean from my 35mm to a digital theres going to be a huge difference, but from a G3 to the Digital Rebel, yes theres way better quality (leaving it in english) in the Rebel, but if the 2 went head to head and the one with the G3 really tried hard, some would be exactly the same and as good.
Its not like 35mm where you can't take 10 pictures of one thing or item, with digital you can, and see which shot or angle came out best.
So all I am saying is that instead of me paying 1000 for the rebel and an extra 300 to match up the zoom
I would rather pay 300 for a G3
But again, does the G3 come with 10x zoom
I don't care of reviews and all that mumble jumble and numbers. It's like Pentium 4, theres not much difference from the 3 or any at all, I own both.
A picture is worth a thousand words, and I will leave it to that.
Why, the purpose of me buying a camera is to take pictures, so I will judge a camera by it's pictures. And no promo pic's.
Real pic's that real people take, amatures or profesions, I am at on both levels, theres things that no one can do as I can, and theres things I can't do or still have to learn.
In belief, you need not to see to BELIEVE.
But in digital cameras, I will open my eyes and see, and compare their pictures, and see if a SMALL DIFFERENCE is worth 1000 dollars extra.
I do appriciate your opinions and responds, and would like to continue to hear your imputs, this was just my 1000.02 cents
thanks

Very cool Scoob, thanks.
If I ever need help again, I know I gotta yell out, Where's Scooby....
You cleared everything up, it makes alot of sence why to get the rebel when comparing it to the G3, the rebel you can add things and autofocus lenses, but the G3 you are stuck with the 3x...
How bout the G5 is it the same, as in you can't add lenses, mainly zoom.
now you got me interested in the
Canon PowerShot S1 IS
I really don't need to print pictures that big, or any bigger then the usual 4 Inch, would it be fine for that.
Its just that I want good zoom,
Sorry to bother you.
I will just try to search on the review sites when I have time, Lately I don't have any, but I have the links already....
