Hi to everyone and a Happy New Year to all,
I have a 30g Long tank that has been setup with saltwater and live sand for over 2 months. I do have green yellowish alage growing and salt crystals forming on the top of the tank. About 2 weeks ago, I purchased 3 blue damsels around an inch long to test the tank. Well they are still alive, but someone told me, after I purchased the damsels, they are agressive fish. I would like to have a tank with only non-agressive fish. I want to put in Clownfishes, 1 tang, and invertabrates, and 1 bennie if there is still room. Oh I do plan on getting live rock within the week. The fishes and shrimps I will add later, about a month after the live rocks has been added. My question is, are the damsels that aggressive that I will have to get rid of them? I do not want to dispose of any live fish. I may return them to the pet store hoping they could maybe give me a credit toward a future purchase.
Thank you all

The damsels are generally pretty agressive and may pick on other tank mates - they will almost certainly attack eachother.
You should not put any tang into a 30g tank - it is simply not big enough for them. Maybe consider a dwarf angel instead, but even that is pushing it. I would consider royal gramma and firefish as good candidates for that size tank also.

Thats what I was thinking too. Tangs are better suited in a larger tank, and depending on the species, need at least a 55/75 gallon tank.
I have a 24 gallon tank which is a reef tank. Right now I have a full grown male maroon clown, which is about 2.5" and a 2.5-3" coral beauty angel in there for the time being. Once my 55 gallon gets set up, proper accommodations will be made for one of them since Im pushing the limit with mine.
For our size, I might suggest a firefish, gobies, blennies, clowns, royal gramma as mentioned above, and maybe one or two other kinds that I may be forgetting, but thats about it.

Hey Jason. Welcome to the boards! I hope that you are liking everything so far. The damsels are often sold to newer hobbiests. They will be a menace. Three damsels in a thirty will harass each other, let alone other fish that you want. Unfortunately, no tang is suited for your sized tank. They are open water swimmers and decline in health in smaller tanks quite quickly. There are many options for you though. There are plenty of colorful and personable species of smaller fish that will do great in your sized tank. First, get the damsels out and some LR in. Have you bought your own tes kits yet? Patients is key in this hobby. Ask us any and all questions that you may have

Thank you all so far for your inputs. The 30g tank is at my place of work, and I will not get a tang since they need more room and grow pretty fast. As of testing the tank, I have and will test again after the live rock is settle in. Looks like I will not put in any more fish till sometime next month. I will research other smaller, friendlier fishes you all have mention. The damsels will stay till before I put in other fishes. Thank you all and have a good day.
