Ok my new fish, which happens to be a royal gramma (my personal reef tank favorite fish), possibly has ick!. He currently has around 10 white dots on him, and his tail fin looks to be ripped apart in a few places. What do I do?? I currently have a Yellow Tang, which aperently is an ick magnet. NO signs on him. I've tried to remove fish in the past w/ no luck atall. And the last time I used amedicine it destroyed my tank. What can I do?? Im curious on the garlic treatment, how would I go about doing such a thing. Please help. Thank you for the advice.

Yes garlic is a great product. I work in the saltwater department of our LFS and I know many of times we have treated the fish with garlic to get rid of ich and it works. We have a liquid extract which we drop on some pellets and put them in the tank. Another good idea would be to get a cleaner shrimp. They are good at eating any kind of external parasite on fish especially ich. Predator and I got one for our tank and it has eaten the ich off of our blue tang.

get 2, they do much better in pairs, and are more likely to go to work faster, insteead of hiding
but if you are after ick, or another parasite, i'd borrow the money because time is important, you don't want to wait for the week end to come around(that is a long time)
HTH and good luck

Keep in mind, some fish don't like to be cleaned! It has taken a year for my tang to let my cleaners work on him. (And sometimes that looks like it's under protest :D ), The garlic does work well, but if it is too far advanced, it may not be enough. Also try to suppliment w/ zoe vitamins. It will help build up immune system and I've seen great results.

From what i read on this board garlic will work if the ick is not too far along or is guess i should say if it is not a bad case of it. It didn't work for me. I got back from going up north for christmas and everything in the tank except a clown had ick. Well the next day 2 fish died and i set up a hospital tank. I moved the clown, tang and royal gramma to the hospital tank and continued to feed garlic soaked food but also started hypo. Well the tang and gramma died the following day. The clown was almost completely covered about 5 days ago and is now looking good. No more white spots. He only has about 3 1/2 weeks left in the hospital.
I guess I am saying try to get these guys out and into a hospital tank and do hyposalinity. My cleaner never went near the royal gramma or any of the other fish in my tank even though the tang stopped by for a cleaning all the time.

i had a small outbreak of ick that is currently ending. I use both cleaner shrimp and garlic. I bought the cleaners in a group of three (figured why not), dropped those little suckers into the tank and not 30 mins had passed before fish started stoping by to get cleaned. It is amazing. funny thing is that when i work in the tank the skunks run over and "Clean" me. very silly little critters.

I have the answer for you. I set up my reef tank two years ago and had a serious problem with ick killing every fish I introduced except the 1st two percs. I tried all the usual crap(increasing temp, lower spec. gravity, fresh water bath). All to know avail. I was about to dismantle my tank to catch and treat the fish in a separate tank as that was the only way I was going to capture them. MIRACLE! A friend told me about a product called KICK-ICK manufactured by Ruby Reef Inc., Silver Springs FL. It is a 15 day reef safe water treatment that definitely works. I have never seen a spot of ick on any of my fish in the past several months since using this product. Thanks Ruby Reef!

I have heard that Kick Ich works sometimes and not others. Just wanted to say that, and that the prior post sure sounds like an advertisement. :)
As I understand, the disease people swear by a hyposalinity/garlic treatment. But it is recommended to bring it down to 1.009 over a 2 day period.

KICK-ICK works plain & simple. This is no advertisement. After I lost several fish and every new inhabitant got ick & I tried all the so called remedies this one worked. You won't be disappointed. I followed the instructions on the bottle to the T.

I thank you all for the help. I came home from work and the gramma was free of all ick symptoms. I do see my CB shrimp cleaning my tank, do they clean parasites of of fellow tank mates??
