OK...we have raccoons that eat our cat and bird food...NO BIGGIE....and they are quite large
Last night(this mornng and still) there was one on m,y front porch....did not look right.......It was skinny, and disoriented and keeps falling over
I was able to go out there and put food out...and it did eat it.....I also gave it water....
HERE IS THE BIG ?????? Do we need to put it out of it's "misery" Could it have a disease that is dangerous to our pets???
WHAT SHOULD I DO? YOU know what hubby thinks

If any animal is falling over for no reason there is probably a diseas (probably raibese(?)) killing it, if it got a hold on any of your animals it may infect them.
euthanizing it is probably the best option.

SIGH.....I was afraid of that......My husband already said we should, BUT.....
I feel so bad.....I will have to have him do it...and I WILL NOT watch :(
The raccoon is walking all around the fenceline of the house.....I don;t think it can figure out how to get out because I am pretty sure it can not climb.....It is so pitiful just watching it :(
I'll update ...................later............

It's probably sick/diseased. You have pets, it needs to go.
You can feel bad about killing it, but you'll feel worse if it harms one of your babies!

Momma just chase 'em off with a broom

LOL.....I was able to stand a foot from it......this raccoon is not capable of running off :( I tried scaring it last night, and it just looked at me...with that pitiful look

I would either call animal control, or shoot it. It is not normal for a racoon to be out in daytime and it is most likely rabid.

I feel sick about this...BUT know it is necessary

Sorry to hear about it, but it was the only option, and it's more humane to be shot before too much pain can be inflicted from rabiese(?).

Raccoon Stew

1 (4 lb.) raccoon, cut into cubes
2 or 3 onions, sliced
2 to 3 c. canned tomatoes, chopped
Salt & pepper
Bay leaf
Dash of Worcestershire sauce
Carrots
Onions
Potatoes
Turnips
Brown the meat cubes slowly in a Dutch oven. There should be enough fat within the tissues that no additional oil is required. Add onions during the last of the browning process so they won't become scorched. Reduce the heat, add enough tomatoes and liquid to cover the meat, season and cover. Simmer over low heat until almost completely tender. Add cubed vegetables of your choice and continue to simmer until vegetables are tender. Serve hot with biscuits.

He was either diseased or just old and starving.
I am a licensed wildlife rehabber, I still occasionally take squirrels and raccoon babies, although not much else anymore. I had one little female with cateracts that although released, stayed close to home as she was handicapped in the wild. Wocky went through a tough stage where she would try and break into the house at night. She learned how to jimmy the front door and wake up everyone.
One night I saw a raccoon on the front porch and heard "her" monkeying with the front door. After about twenty minutes, I got aggrevated and walked out the door, scooped her up by her scruff and carried her down to the barn with the intent of caging her for the night. As I got to the barn, I heard her trill and come running out of the dark wanting to play.
I thought I was a goner. What exactly do you do with the unknown raccoon you are holding? I opted for throw it and run!
The next morning, the second coon was still ambling around, very slowly, I felt bad thinking I had hurt it by throwing it and called the wildlife vet who came out. I trapped it in the raccoon cage and he sedated him. Poor guy was ancient, he had no teeth left and was in the beginning stages of slowly starving to death. I felt so bad about slinging him so he wasn't euth'd, I kept him for another couple of months caged, feeding him food he could eat (also to keep an eye on him making sure he was not rabid), even so he never made any headway in gaining back any ground. In hindsight, had I not felt guilty, it would have been kinder to put him down in the beginning.
