Need Help On Adding New Fish.

I will be adding my first fish to my tank (bought an established tank with existing livestock) in the next week or so. I have read a bunch on proper acclimation and decided to use the "drip" technique. Here is my problem. I do not have a QT. What risk am I taking by not using a QT? What types of things should I be looking for that would indicate a problem? Also I read somewhere about waiting 4 weeks between adding fish. Why is this?

well with out a QT it is very possible to introduce diseases into your tank, so if you are not gonna have one then examine the fish you are gonna get at your LFS...is it gonna be reef or FO and were u lookin for agressive or nice fish also what size tank?
