"Sand sifting" fish are great for stirring your sand, but horrible for keeping your tank clean. When they "sfit" they are eating all of the beneficial micro critters in your sand bed.
Nass stars, certain cucumbers, good powerheads blowing across your sand, etc. along with a good dose of micro critters are the best ways to keep your sand clean.

Get a bunch of tiny Nassarius snails. They are great fun to watch (they look like little slimy swans gliding around through your sand) and they burrow in and out of the sand quite a bit.
I was just whining that all the seeming sandsifting critters had huge downsides (from cucumbers that wipe out entire tanks, to starfish that eat themselves to death, to urchins knocking things over and getting stuck, etc.) I managed to find 4 of these guys, and while that's nowhere near enough for my 55gal, they were great additions, and still really the only macro critters than play in my sand/cc.

I don't keep sand sifting gobies and sea stars because of what Journeyman mentioned.
Nassarius snails, ceriths and queen conchs is all I keep for the sand bed.

I got a Diamond Goby 2 days ago. My SB was really dirty and up until this morning the tank was pretty cloudy. Now the SB is really clean and all the dust appears to have filtered or settled elsewhere (I had to blow off the gunk from my LR.) IMO sand sifters are good but get something that wont almost make your LS dead sand.
