I believe that the dormant stage of many parasites can easily be on coral; they just end up wherever they land. The water will contain the free-swimming stage.

Not that this contributes much.. but I love the yellow bellied blue tang --- saw one in a display tank in Minneapolis --- was about 6 inches and just cute :)
If you want to mix tangs.. I'd do yellow/purple tang with a powder/blue tang -- at least get one of each body style as they tend to be less aggressive to each other that way.

You're right! I just never thought about it that way! When the theront drops off a fish I just always thought of it landing on the substrate. My bad!
