Please show me your custom canopies. We are going to a cabinet maker this afternoon and would like to show him a few different canopy designs.
This is for our 150 g tank that will have 2 400MH attached to the inside of the canopy.
Your help will be greatly appreciated :)

Do you have to lift the whole canopy off in order to clean the tank and work on the lights? We are wanting to have the canopy stay in place and open up as much as possible. Maybe with piano hinges?

You can take it off but I don't...
If you need to look at the lights there are doors on the front of the canopy.
the doors that are on my 210 are 12" by 22" and there are three of them...

How easy is your tank to clean when you have the canopy open?
Pleanty of room to get in the tank. The piano hinge works great. I have never had a problem reaching anything in the tank.

Heres mine, obviously unfinished, eventually it will have doors. Can't see them in photos, but I have two 6" cooling fans above the light ~ blowing out of the canopy. I also added two 6" cooling fans below the light ~ blowing towards the front of the canopy (across the surface of the aquarium).

Lights sit 10 inches above the water surface; two 65 watt PCs and a 250W MH on a 65 gallon. So 10 inches is not a problem; plenty of punch with the MH. Wanted room to work on tank without removing canopy, and wanted to avoid heating tank, which was why I set the lights as high as I did. Hoping to not have to run a chiller. So far so good, but we'll see, I'm not placing any bets at this point.

We are back. It may be that we'll have to stick to the one we have for our 135. I have a feeling the new stand/canopy is going to be way more expensive than what I imagined it would be. I'll probably need to check with a few other cabinet maker if the one we planned today is out of our budget.

Depending on the wood you choose and how detailed of a design,I could see 400$ minimum for a NICE canopy.

That is OK, I'm just waiting for the price for the whole deal.. stand and canopy. We wanted good access to the stand with doors in both ends and *fake* doors in the canopy that don't open. Just the doors are going to run $250+ UGH I can only imagine what the whole deal is going to be

Yes,unfortunately custom cabinetry,or any SPECIAL request woodworking project demands a small fortune these days. I worked in a shop for a few years that did high end stuff.. I would check a few other places, just in case...but ,it will be fairly expensive for a quality job. Only other suggestion I have is to check with your local reef club, maybe somebody does woodworking as a hobby on the side, and can give you a fair price...I know Ive been approached numerous times by the "locals".

I will do that once I've gotten the price and if it's more than we can afford. We've already spent a small fortune on the new tank, sump/ref/skimmer system, lighting, rock etc.

Keep in mind that wood has gotten very expensive lately, especially hardwoods. Just to give you an idea, I have over $350 in the materials alone in my stand and canopy. I do woodworking as a hobby/sideline, and I just priced building a stand and canopy for a 120 gallon out of bluepine for my local LFS owner (he's setting up his own tank at home); and materials alone are going to run $350+. I priced the whole job for $800. For him to order one at his cost would be about the same, but the custom built one will be of better quality wood and look like he wants it to look. It will be designed to his specs; give much better access to the refugium, and have an open top canopy so heat build-up isn't as much of an issue.

Are you sitting down? We got quoted $1600 for stand/canopy. I'd say there is quite a bit of air there because I already talked to another cabinet maker and we are talking a different ball park already and he had no problem with our design which is nothing special in the stand part, just something different in the canopy part.
